Under the close supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs technical duties related to pharmaceutical care accurately and timely.
Responsibilities- Prepare compounded non‑sterile and sterile preparations, including chemotherapy, IV additive solutions, and controlled substances, for final pharmacist verification.
- Interpret physician orders, select, measure, and compound appropriate medications, inspect finished products, label, maintain records, and obtain final pharmacist check.
- Determine accurate expiration or beyond‑use dates using standard protocols.
- Interpret, fill, and prepare prescriptions with appropriate medications or supplies for pharmacist verification.
- Receive, check, rotate, and place items in stock from pharmacy procurement; reconcile discrepancies.
- Inventory and replenish OR and surgical area trays, RSI kits, etc.
- Handle, manage, and distribute controlled substances in compliance with regulations; assist with drug diversion surveillance.
- Operate and maintain automated dispensing unit dose systems, complex pharmacy equipment, and repackaging software.
- Package medications into single unit doses and prepare patient‑specific doses.
- Inventory, assess, and determine the need for floor stock and external medication.
- Follow policies, schedules, inventory levels, and usage reports to determine appropriate stock levels.
- Restock drug storage areas and refill automated drug dispensing devices throughout the hospital.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical equipment and instruments.
- Knowledge of regulations and practice standards of pharmaceutical care.
- Knowledge of drug names, strengths, and dosage forms.
- Knowledge of applicable computer system software programs.
- Skill in using pharmaceutical equipment and instruments.
- Skill in critical thinking during pharmaceutical care activities.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Minimum Experience QualificationNon‑supervisory – None.
Minimum Certification QualificationMust possess a current State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern license.
Preferred Experience QualificationPharmacy or related experience.
Additional Requirements- If exposure to hazardous materials and medications, sharp objects, and infectious diseases is present, must don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must operate within appropriate engineering controls such as negative pressure storage rooms and compounding hoods.
