Position: Fish and Wildlife Geneticist 2 (PCN 115323)

Overview

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Geneticist 2 located in Anchorage.

What you will be doing

In collaboration with the Division of Wildlife Conservation, this position serves as a professional-level geneticist and project leader with the ADFG Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) for complex wildlife genetics and genomics research projects across the State of Alaska. Although based at the GCL, work will be carried out in support of and alongside ADFG’s wildlife biologists.

Responsibilities include:

designing and implementing projects using proven genetic methods, molecular techniques, and population genetic theory; providing consultation on genetic questions and coordination of genetic research across the state; compiling and analyzing data; presenting findings in oral and written formats to science and non-science audiences; providing review and authorship of research manuscripts; and preparing and submitting grant applications. A key component of the work will entail building relationships and collaborations across state, federal, tribal, university, non-governmental, and international entities to help further the goal of sustainable wildlife management in the state.

The working environment you can expect

This full-time position is based at the ADFG office in Anchorage, Alaska, at the GCL. The GCL is a high-throughput, state-of-the-art genetics lab. This is a dynamic position and work will be performed at a computer and through daily interactions with a team of GCL staff, ADFG staff, and outside collaborators. Some travel is expected to coordinate research projects and provide expertise, and occasional field work may be necessary for sample collections.
