Overview
UMIAQ Environmental is seeking an Environmental Specialist to assist with research and documentation, logistics and planning, outreach and engagement activities, permit applications, and project tracking. Essential to this role is a love of writing and strong communication skills.
This is a full-time position located at Umiaq Environmental's main office located in Anchorage, Alaska.
ResponsibilitiesEssential functions will include:
Follow existing procedures for document review, organization, and file structure.
Develop detailed project descriptions based on information received verbally in meetings and on project drawings/schematics.
Communicate clearly and respectfully to all coworkers, clients, and stakeholders.
Outreach by phone to coordinate public engagement activities.
Draft, edit, and finalize environmental documents including Development Plans, Environmental Assessments, and Wildlife Interaction Plans.
Other duties may include: wetlands monitoring, report writing, proposal writing, preparation of cost estimates, and more.
Expertise in clear and concise writing is required.
It is essential that the Environmental Specialist works well with people and has demonstrated strong communication skills.
Extensive software skills are required, including working familiarity with MS Office Suite, Adobe, as well as Internet research abilities.
Planning, organizing, and prioritizing workload are primary duties. The Environmental Specialist must be flexible and capable of adapting to changing timelines.
Ability to work methodically and independently.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications:
Prior experience with environmental permitting or rural community planning is preferred, as is a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Earth Science, or a related field.
Minimum 2 years’ experience applying NEPA, obtaining project authorizations in Alaska, or working in a similar position/ similar field.
Familiarity with environmental and regulatory requirements for construction projects in Alaska, including an understanding of the NEPA process.
General understanding of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and landownership in the State.
Essential to this role are strong writing, grammar, and citation skills. Please provide a writing example.

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and bending.
Regular lifting and carrying of equipment or materials weighing 30 pounds or more.
Ability to work in outdoor environments, including uneven terrain and varying weather conditions.
Visual acuity and manual dexterity required for data collection, equipment use, and documentation.
Mental focus and alertness needed to follow safety procedures and accurately complete field tasks.
Ability to work long hours in remote field locations as required by project needs.
Exposure to all types of weather conditions, including cold, wind, rain, and heat.
Regular field visits based on project requirements.
Ability to travel to and from job sites throughout Alaska, including remote locations.
Travel may involve driving long distances or flying in small aircraft.
Fieldwork may include extended hours, irregular schedules, and overnight stays in remote areas.
