About the Role
To take incoming emergency and administration calls on 911 and other 7‑digit telephone lines. Enter specific information into a computer‑aided dispatch system and provide pre‑arrival instructions. Route callers to other locations as needed. Provide calls with assistance in a prompt, courteous manner.
Responsibilities- Answer incoming 911 and 7‑digit telephone calls.
- Obtain specific call information and enter it into CAD.
- Provide medical, fire, and law enforcement pre‑arrival instructions.
- Route calls to other locations as necessary.
- Make outgoing calls to assist Communication Specialists.
- Complete inquiry forms on incorrect 911 and CAD data.
- Assist as a dispatcher as required.
- Monitor dispatch of critical calls to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in training new Call Takers and Communication Specialists/Operators.
- Make entries, modifications, deletions, and inquiries into NCIC.
- Monitor incoming alarm panel for Police, Fire, and EMS alarms.
- Monitor internal building security cameras.
- Handle high mental stress situations concerning life and death.
- Operate NAWAS system (National Warning System).
- Take on‑call duty as scheduled.
- Type at least 25 words per minute.
- Perform routine cleaning of equipment and call taker area.
- Serve shift supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
- SC 911 certification (Criminal Justice Academy) or ability to obtain.
- APCO 40‑hour Telecommunicator certification.
- Skywarn certification (National Weather).
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Up to 1‑year experience in management or supervision.
Manage under direct supervision of a Communications Shift Supervisor, Communications Assistant Shift Supervisor, Training Coordinator, Communications Assistant Manager, and/or Communications Manager.
Competencies for Successful Performance- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public.
- Exercise sound judgment and make decisions.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Perform day‑to‑day functions without specific instructions.
- Work within established priorities and refer unusual problems to supervisor.
