Under the direction of the special education teacher and/or the Special Education Program Head, and in collaboration with classroom teachers, perform instructional or self-help tasks designed to enhance learning, behavior, social-emotional development, Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and access to the general curriculum for students with identified educational disabilities. The following duties are illustrative of the work performed:

  • Implement individual or small group lessons of teacher-designed materials under the guidance of the special education teacher, classroom teacher, or specialist.
  • Apply accommodations and modifications as outlined in student IEPs and directed by the special education teacher.
  • Support and instruct students on behavioral, self-help, and ADL goals as specified in their IEPs, medical plans, and behavioral plans.
  • Collect ongoing data as directed by the special education team.
  • Provide additional practice and re-teaching of skills as needed.
  • Assist classroom teachers in implementing IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications for students with disabilities.
  • Help students access and organize instructional materials and record their work.
  • Reinforce classroom rules and protocols, and implement IEP-related behavioral accommodations.
  • Supervise students during arrival, recess, lunch, and departure times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum requirements include a minimum of two years of college or equivalent experience working with children, understanding student curriculum, and the ability to implement multiple teacher-directed activities. Knowledge of computer applications, including classroom and adaptive technologies, is essential.
