Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Building Principal, the Reading Specialist Teacher will:
- Work regularly with teachers and students to prevent and/or remediate reading failure;
- Recommend and model the implementation of preventative classroom accommodations;
- Provide support to classroom teachers for tiered instruction;
- Monitor student progress in reading programs within each school;
- Participate in data analysis and data team meetings;
- Provide literacy instruction and intervention, as well as assessment to improve student literacy achievement;
- Collaborate with colleagues around literacy planning, instruction and assessment;
- Communicate and collaborate about student learning and progress with teachers, administrators and parents under the Direction of the PK-5 Literacy Program Coordinator and the Building Principal;
- Engage in school wide assessment efforts, such as but not limited to MCAS proctoring and kindergarten screenings;
- Engage in various meetings, such as data teams, literacy team meetings and Reading Specialist meetings;
- Participate in literacy professional development opportunities.
- Massachusetts Teaching Certification in Elementary, Early Childhood or Special Education
- Certification as Reading Specialist
- Demonstrated knowledge of reading theory and research, their implementation, and major educational trends.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the design, implementation and evaluation of developmental and remedial reading programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the use of formal and informal assessments, and analysis and interpretations of results to prescribe appropriate reading and language instruction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the techniques and materials to foster the interrelationship among reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
- Desirable experience:
- Evidence of highly successful relevant teaching experiences of at least 5 years
- Experience with balanced literacy instruction and research-based interventions
- Demonstrated organizational and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with children and adults with tact, empathy, and skill
- Demonstrated leadership ability
