MSc in Geochemistry

The MSc in Geochemistry teaches the skills and knowledge to address such fundamental questions as: was there ever life on Mars; what was the chemistry of Earth's ancient atmosphere; how has the mantle evolved through time; what are the rates and drivers of past and current climate change on Earth? Geochemistry also has widespread applications in understanding and solving contemporary problems, ranging from pollution of soils and waters, to rates of ocean acidification, to the exploration and management of natural resources.

It is a forensic part of Earth science and is used to address questions that are diverse, profound, and exciting. This broad and rigorous course delivers postgraduate-level knowledge and skills training in modern geochemical methods, involving hands‑on laboratory training, field sampling and experience with state‑of‑the‑art equipment. It provides preparation for either pursuing a PhD, by incorporating a lab‑based research dissertation, or direct employment in industry, through applied economic or environmental geochemistry modules and the potential of industrial placement through dissertation research projects.

Founded in the early 15th century, the University of St Andrews is Scotland's first university and the third oldest in the English‑speaking world. The University is a top‑100 Global University and was ranked first in the 2022 Times University league.

The School houses state‑of‑the‑art stable and radiogenic isotope geochemistry, geobiology and rock magnetic laboratories, as well as a range of other facilities to support student research.

Geochemistry course entry requires a minimum 2.1 Honours degree in quantitative Earth Sciences from a UK university, or the equivalent for international students in a subject‑related area.

For Environmental Sciences we will consider entries from those with a biological, environmental or physical science, geography, or other subject‑related background.
