Civics English Tutor

Civics English Tutors support adult newcomers preparing for the U.S. citizenship exam or wanting to strengthen their civic knowledge and English skills. Volunteers provide structured tutoring in reading, writing, speaking, and U.S. history/government content. This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy teaching, explaining concepts clearly, and helping learners reach long‑term goals.

Responsibilities

• Meet weekly with an assigned learner to teach English and U.S. civics content
• Prepare lessons based on learner goals (e.g., N‑400 vocabulary, interview practice, 128 civics questions)
• Teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, and civic knowledge
• Provide practice activities, mock interviews, and study strategies
• Maintain professional boundaries and respect cultural differences
• Keep simple records of learner progress and communicate with the Program Manager as needed

Time Commitment

• 1–2 hours per week
• Minimum 3‑month commitment preferred
• Sessions may be in person or virtual

Qualifications

• Clear, fluent English speaking and writing skills
• Ability to explain U.S. civics concepts in simple, accessible language
• Patience, cultural sensitivity, and a supportive teaching style
• At least 18 years old
• Completion of RIVA orientation and training
• No prior teaching experience required—training and materials provided
