Position Summary
Are you interested in making the world a better place? As the Assistant Day Camp Director, you will lead and coordinate lesson plans for 8 weeks of engaging experiences for girls in the greater Ann Arbor community. You’ll ensure every day is different and every week brings new adventure, while maintaining a safe and positive environment for campers and staff.
Essential Functions- Lead in the Camp Director’s absence and complete daily and weekly paperwork and reports.
- Assist in daily camp operations and ensure the program meets the requirements outlined in the Summer Camp Guide.
- Develop and implement program activities that align with the mission and outcomes of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
- Supervise and support day‑camp counseling staff, ensuring program needs are achieved.
- Ensure the safety and supervision of all campers at all times, applying safety guidelines and emergency procedures.
- Handle conflicts between counselors, campers, and parents with professionalism and empathy.
- Provide weekly staff meetings to discuss program quality, concerns, and staff support.
- Assist with pre‑camp training and post‑camp close‑up activities.
- Maintain high standards of health and safety for all activities.
- Manage daily care of each camper, recognizing personal health needs and administering medication as required.
- Monitor equipment and facilities, reporting repairs promptly and acting as health officer when needed.
- Represent the camp and GSHOM when interacting with parents or community members, providing appropriate feedback and information.
- Follow all safety and security protocols, presenting a positive image of the camp and GSHOM.
Job Duties
- Understand and support the mission of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan: "Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place."
- Supervise campers during transportation to and from camp or scheduled field trips.
- Provide verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Supply weekly program information and a list of supplies and needs to the Camp Director in a timely manner.
- Pull camp rosters and deliver camp‑related materials to parents via email.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must obtain or already hold First Aid/CPR Level 2 certification.
- Must submit a completed health history form prior to the first day of employment.
- Must be able to interact with all age levels and submit information for background checks.
- Understanding of youth developmental needs.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults positively.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in designated camp program areas.
- Effectively communicate and provide instruction to groups of varying ages and skill levels.
- Observe staff and camper behavior, enforce safety regulations, and apply behavior‑management techniques.
- Use visual and auditory skills to identify and respond to environmental hazards.
- Respond to emergencies requiring first aid, including fire, evacuation, illness, or injury.
- Maintain constant supervision of campers, requiring strength and endurance.
This position requires active participation in program activities, including outdoor work, navigation of varied terrains for extended periods, and lifting at least 50 pounds.
CompensationWages start at $17 per hour.
Location & DatesAnn Arbor Regional Center Day Camp, June 1 – August 14, 2026.
