Associate Director for Collections
Bentley Historical Library | University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

The Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan seeks talented applicants for the role of Associate Director for Collections. Overseeing some of the oldest documents of Michigan as well as the archives of the University of Michigan, the Bentley is a pre-eminent research archive, open to all and serving the needs of researchers and students worldwide. The Associate Director for Collections will help plan for the future of these great collections, steering their focus and scope for maximum impact.

Reporting to the library director, Alexis Antracoli, the Associate Director for Collections manages a team of six professionals (5 archivists and 1 research associate) who acquire collections, explore and implement post-custodial approaches, engage with campus and local communities, provide specialized reference services, and support teaching, learning, and programming centered on the collections.

This person both establishes a vision and sets goals for the collections team and oversees day-to-day operations. Their focus is on effective and ethical stewardship in the context of a library and university committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will possess an ALA-accredited master’s degree in library, archival, or information science with a special collections/archival focus, or an equivalent advanced degree and relevant experience, as well as at least three years of professional experience as an archivist/librarian/curator and a record of progressive responsibilities, among other qualifications.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $100,000-$120,000 with a generous benefits package. Note that the final salary will reflect internal equity and the selected candidate’s individual experiences and qualifications. The mode of work for this position is in person with the option of one day per week hybrid.
