Tenure-track Faculty Position in Atmospheric / Climate Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

The Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP) in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. We seek to hire a faculty member at the assistant professor level whose research advances our understanding of weather systems and extreme weather, with a strong foundation in atmospheric dynamics and the coupled Earth system.

Areas of expertise could include high-resolution weather and climate modeling and forecasting; the detection and attribution of extreme events; and assessments of the subseasonal-to-seasonal or decadal evolution of weather and climate. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) methods are widely applied in meteorology and atmospheric modeling, revolutionizing prediction and forecasting; we expect the successful candidate to contribute a high level of expertise in this area.

We seek candidates capable of developing an internationally recognized research program, competing successfully for external funding, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to our educational mission at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and strengthening the culture, diversity, and collaborative environment of the department, college, and university. We value applicants whose research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary and have the potential to address real-world weather and climate impacts.

Applications should include, in PDF format: (1) cover letter (2-page limit), (2) Curriculum Vitae (no page limit), (3) research statement (3-page limit), (4) mentoring, teaching and pedagogy statement (2-page limit), (5) a list of three significant publications (with DOIs), (6) and a list of four references with contact details. A PhD in a subject related to meteorological, atmospheric, or climate sciences, or other relevant disciplines in sciences or engineering is required.

For full consideration, applications should be received by November 13, 2026.

Questions about the position or application process can be directed to the search committee chair, Christiane Jablonowski (cjablono).

The U-M CLaSP research portfolio spans climate, space, and planetary science with annual research expenditures of $30 million. CLaSP has 25 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 26 research faculty, over 50 undergraduates, and 110 graduate students. CLaSP offers an exciting research and teaching environment with a wide scope and rich expertise within the department, as well as diversified interdisciplinary opportunities within the university.

The research themes in CLaSP include weather and climate modeling and observations, atmospheric dynamics, radiation and remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry and air pollution, atmosphere-biosphere interactions, as well as hydrosphere and cryosphere research.
