Toyota is looking for a Senior Scientist position in the Electronics Research Department focused on developing novel and highly effective future power conversion solutions, particularly those utilizing Wide Bandgap (WBG and/UWBG) semiconductors, for a broad range of applications and power levels. Representative applications range from high power/voltage electric vehicle systems down to lower power highly sensitive (e.g., quantum) sensor systems. Key aspects of this research will involve the cross-disciplinary exploration of opto-electronics, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and state-of-the art packaging leveraging expertise in future semiconductor technology.
What you’ll be doing- Lead and conduct research on novel power conversion solutions for a range of applications including high power/voltage systems to low power/voltage sensors.
- Investigate and propose new opto-electronic power packaging solutions possibly involving both electrical integrated circuit (EIC) and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology.
- Develop advanced EMI mitigation techniques for high-speed power electronic converters, with a focus on WBG/UWBG semiconductor devices.
- Explore the use of optically triggered semiconductor devices, leveraging expertise in semiconductor physics to optimize their performance for reduced EMI.
- Conduct multiphysics (e.g., electrical, optical, thermal, mechanical) simulation and modeling of power electronics systems and packages to predict performance.
- Develop and build bench-level experimental setups in-house to test and validate power conversion and/or sensor concepts.
- Analyze, document, and present research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Mentor and guide junior researchers or technical staff.
- Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
- Drive innovation by generating novel ideas and proposing new research projects.
- Willingness to learn and engage in new research areas (e.g., quantum science, photonics) and apply skills to new fields is a must.
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related multi-disciplinary engineering field.
- Experience with circuit design, simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, Simulink, MATLAB), circuit layout, and PCB fabrication.
- Hands‑on research, development, measurement of electronic packages with optical function integration (e.g., high speed, RF design, EMI, or analog circuit).
- Exposure to semiconductor device characteristics either through practice or coursework.
- Demonstrated ability to lead research projects and mentor team/lab members.
- Experience in designing, building, and operating experimental setups for high‑speed electronics.
- Sophisticated scientific writing and history of technical presentations in conferences.
- Understanding of quantum mechanics and principles.
- Experience with WBG/UWBG semiconductor devices (e.g., SiC, GaN) and modeling tools.
- Basic knowledge of optically triggered devices.
- Experience with multiphysics and EMI simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, EMA3D, etc.).
- Knowledge of CAD software (e.g., Solid Works or similar).
- Exposure to PIC research and development (e.g., simulation, device layout, tape out, fab, test).
- A work environment built on teamwork, flexibility, and respect.
- Professional growth and development programs to help advance your career, as well as…
