HDR is seeking a Power Engineer in Training (i.e., Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical EIT) to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team, which provides engineering consulting services. As an EIT, you will join a highly capable, multi-discipline team supporting power and energy projects primarily within the utility, independent power producer, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors across the U.S. and abroad.

Engineering duties include providing support for engineering and construction projects at power generation, cogeneration, and district heating and cooling facilities for utility, industrial, and institutional clients. Project types include combined and simple cycle power generation, reciprocating engine power generation, steam and chilled water distribution, water treatment, air quality control, and plant betterment, including renewables such as solar, wind, and battery storage.

Our work typically involves design and consulting for power generation and energy infrastructure, including systems like steam, condensate, cooling water, water treatment, natural gas, compressed air, fire protection, HVAC, air quality control, material handling, and others.

The position may also include specialized training and assignments (e.g., piping stress analysis, heat balances, ETAP using industry-accepted software).

The primary responsibilities may include:

  • Performing engineering calculations and code reviews
  • Sizing and selecting materials and equipment
  • Participating in site visits and surveys
  • Developing piping & instrument drawings
  • Developing equipment and piping arrangement drawings
  • Developing water mass balances
  • Reviewing manufacturers' drawings and submittals
  • Developing procurement and construction specifications
  • Performing bid evaluations
  • Evaluating existing systems and equipment
  • Participating in team meetings
  • Communicating with equipment vendors
  • Processing engineering submittals and other similar tasks
  • Preparing equipment layouts
  • Feasibility study development
  • Economic lifecycle analyses
  • Technology assessments
  • Coordinating cost estimating and schedule development resources
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Candidates without their EIT will be placed into a Design Coordinator role and are expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
