Advanced Practice Professional (Nurse Practitioner) – Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Service
We are looking for an Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) to join our Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Service at the
D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion. The position will be a 1.0 FTE, night/day rotator (majority night shifts with occasional day shifts, holiday and weekend rotations).
The new Pavilion is a 12‑story, 264‑room facility with intensive care capability, a neurosciences center, and advanced cardiac and thoracic services. It will open in fall 2025 adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

- Manage pre‑ and post‑cardiac surgery patients in a telemetry/step‑down unit.
- Perform, order, and interpret advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks relevant to cardiac surgery and procedures.
- Complete detailed histories and physical exams; present pertinent data to faculty.
- Order and interpret diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
- Educate patients and families on disease management, surgical procedures, post‑operative instructions, and preventive care.
- Perform limited diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures such as temporary pacing wire removal, chest tube removal, wound debridement, incision and drainage, wound vac placement, and NG tube insertion.
- Discuss surgical procedures, obtain consent, and facilitate order entry and interpretation of pre‑operative testing.
- Maintain continuity of care; provide thorough hand‑offs to incoming shifts.
- Collaborate with attending physicians and other care providers to coordinate clinical care and elevate patient safety as needed.
- Keep accurate documentation of patient status, evaluations, and treatments.
- Streamline patient transfer processes, write discharge orders, and communicate patient needs.
- Participate in peer evaluations, quality‑assurance activities, research projects, and other initiatives to improve patient care.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Maintain current knowledge of medical principles and Michigan Medicine policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Engage in activities that promote professional growth and self‑development.
- Adhere to all dress codes, safety policies, Service Excellence and Patient‑Family Centered Care (PFCC) guidelines.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.
Required Qualifications – NP- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification in Michigan.
- Current certification as an Adult‑Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
- Certification recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- ACLS certification.
- AHA Approved BLS certification.
- Current DEA registration.
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Michigan and a Controlled Substance license.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- ACLS certification.
- AHA Approved BLS certification.
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License.
