Responsibilities
  • Assist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with peri‑operative care of surgical patients on the inpatient unit (4B) and as a first or second assistant in the operating room.
  • Provide peri‑operative care for patients in the outpatient clinic.
  • Collaborate with attendings, fellows, residents, nurses, PAs, NPs, and ancillary staff.
  • Ensure high‑quality inpatient and outpatient care for all oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.
  • Provide education and orientation for pre‑operative patients.
  • Supervise postoperative patients in a clinic setting.
  • Manage patients’ co‑morbidities effectively.
  • Act as the first contact for triaging inpatient consults and facilitate hospital‑to‑hospital transfers.
  • Provide peri‑operative virtual surgical planning services and custom implants.
  • Support the team by participating in daily resident‑led rounds and multidisciplinary discharge rounds.
  • Facilitate safe discharge and transition of care for patients.
  • Communicate with patients’ primary care physicians regarding follow‑up medical plans.
  • Participate in pre‑operative care conferences and minor/major surgical procedures as first or second assistant.
  • Provide patient and family/caregiver education and document care in detailed records.
  • Communicate daily with nurse coordinators for smooth transitions between inpatient and outpatient care.
Required Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan
  • Current specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Michigan
  • Certification as an Adult‑Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Certification recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)
  • Michigan Controlled Substance License
  • ACLS certification (BLS also required unless completed through UMHS Simulation Center)
  • Current DEA registration
Required Qualifications – Physician Assistant
  • Completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by ARC‑PA (or predecessor)
  • Certification by NCCPA
  • License to practice as a Physician Assistant in Michigan
  • ACLS certification (BLS also required unless completed through UMHS Simulation Center)
  • Current DEA registration
  • Michigan Controlled Substance License
Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years full‑time experience as an Advanced Practice Provider
  • At least 1 year experience with inpatient head and neck surgical patients
  • Participation in Quality Improvement projects or research
  • Experience presenting to groups
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, organization, and problem‑solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently while prioritizing teamwork
  • Ability to coordinate clinical care and advocate for patients assertively
  • High level of critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency in managing patients’ co‑morbidities
  • Clinical leadership experience with complex projects
  • Motivation to learn and engage in patient‑care enhancing activities
  • Proficiency in providing patient education
  • Professional appearance and outstanding customer‑service skills
Work Schedule

40 hours per week – Day Shift, Monday‑Friday. Flexible schedule required for inpatient rounding and OR coverage.

Location

Inpatient Adult Hospital and Operating Room, potential for clinic in Med Inn.
