About the Department

Our Infusion Clinic provides a variety of treatments to both Oncology and Non‑Oncology patients. For our Oncology patients the treatments include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, IV hydration, blood products, injections, iron, phlebotomy, bone marrow biopsies, and other infusion therapies related to supportive care. These treatments are provided to our Hematology‑Oncology patients and our Gynecology‑Oncology patients. Many of these patients may be on a clinical research trial or receiving combined modality treatment with radiation therapy.

We also support many other specialties such as rheumatology, neurology, OB, Huron gastroenterology, primary care providers, and the specialized care required for these patients. Our Infusion Clinic is supported by Infusion Nurses, Medical Assistants, Infusion Schedulers, a Nurse Coordinator, Education Coordinator, and an Infusion Manager.

All Infusion Nurses receive their Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy certification through ONS (Oncology Nursing Society). We provide training and education for both novice and experienced infusion nurses and offer yearly recertification for our Chemotherapy‑Certified nurses. EPIC is used as our EMR system.

Hours of operation:
At Ann Arbor – Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; at Canton – 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; at Brighton – 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our clinics are closed on weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • View patients holistically, considering physical, psychosocial, emotional, age‑specific, cultural and spiritual factors; demonstrate appropriate assessment skills for identified patient populations.
  • Gather and analyze patient information, then respond to patient situations using critical thinking skills.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and revise individualized plans of care using evidence‑based interventions and standards of care; identify needs and plan for care across the continuum, considering patient and family preferences.
  • Identify patient and family education needs; develop and implement teaching plans based on evidence‑based practice; use teach‑back methodology to ensure learning effectiveness; identify necessary resources for discharge planning.
  • Create an environment that promotes a positive patient experience.
  • Communicate verbal and written information (including documentation in the EMR) accurately, timely, concisely and thoroughly; convey patient status, priority goals and interventions to colleagues and other disciplines during consultation, rounds and handoffs.
  • Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships; approach conflict constructively; help identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in resolutions.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or agreement in writing to obtain the BSN within five (5) years from date of hire, or transfer to an RN role.
  • Current Michigan nursing license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • All infusion nurses are required to obtain Chemotherapy certification and strongly encouraged to obtain Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age‑specific needs.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Critical thinking skills to perform principal duties and responsibilities of the job description.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care.
