Job Summary:
Med Star Health is seeking a certified Medical Assistant to join our team at Med Star Health Urgent Care. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in a Med Star Urgent Care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital signs measurement and documentation, assisting with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.
This position may require floating to other sites/locations within the system.

Primary Duties:Assist providers with office procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow, manage patient volume, and prepare for scheduled visits. Screen patients for preventive care, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening and coaching on disease management and community outreach.
Identify behavioral health needs and notify providers of findings.
Report actual or potential problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in performance improvement initiatives. Attend training on safety, infection control, etc. Maintain and audit logs, ensure medication supplies are current, check emergency equipment, keep areas clutter-free, and participate in population management activities such as patient engagement and health goal setting.
Perform selected patient/laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, TB testing, EKG, pulmonary function tests, vision, and hearing tests. Remove sutures/staples, document activities in the EMR, and perform follow-up procedures like Pap smears, blood tests, HIV testing, mammograms, and STD testing. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document accordingly.
Provide escort/chaperoning, assist with patient discharge, fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities, and manage equipment maintenance and supplies. Offer telephone screening services to gather patient information, determine disposition, and document per protocols.
May insert IV catheters for fluids or medications, monitor urinary catheters, and prepare/administer oral drugs and injections (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). May perform phlebotomy. Use EMR to propose medication refills, complete test requisitions, and coordinate insurance pre-authorizations for medications and referrals.
High School Diploma/GED
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent
Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program
Externship at Med Star Health may substitute for experience
For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience in an ambulatory care setting, or Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related field, or completion of a cardiac technician course
This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $31.36.
