Engages in firefighting, emergency medical, rescue, and fire prevention activities to protect and safeguard lives and property; assists in maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment; does related work as required. This Public Safety position requires work schedules of shifts to include; 24 hours, Days, Nights, Weekends, Holidays and possible Daywork 40 hours a week assignment.

Responds to fire, emergency medical and other emergency services incidents as needed. Controls and extinguishes fire by selection of appropriate diameter hoses and nozzles, advancing hose line to the seat of the fire and extinguishing the fire using the appropriate technique;
Utilizes various forms of firefighting equipment in fire suppression and/ or rescue operations;
- Operates emergency vehicles to and from emergency incidents;
- Assumes medical responsibility at the scene of emergency medical incidents. Implements triage procedures at multiple casualty emergencies, including assessing the nature and extent of illnesses and injuries, establishing the priority for emergency care, and notifying medical facilities of patient status;
- Performs Basic Life Support (BLS) medical treatment, including patient assessments, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), splinting, bandaging, obstetrical assistance, and the administration of all Maryland approved BLS medications;
- Performs Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) medical treatment, including endotracheal intubation, administration of drugs and intravenous (IV) fluids, cardiac monitoring, and cardiac defibrillation in accordance with the most current Annapolis Fire Department and State of Maryland protocols and as deemed necessary by the Medical Director;
- Responsible for documenting patient care in accordance with department policies and protocols, and regulatory and accrediting agency standards;
- Prepares records and completes reports of emergency medical care given and vehicle operation during assigned operational period;
- Responsible for inspecting emergency vehicles and assigned equipment at the beginning of each shift in order to ensure proper working order and cleanliness, for inventorying and ordering of backup supplies and for documenting and reporting necessary maintenance and repairs;
- Conducts periodic fire safety inspections and fire hazard surveys of residential and commercial occupancies;
- Participates in public education events, highlighting the department’s response capabilities;
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs of equipment and apparatus in the field and as assigned station. Performs and assists with maintenance of assigned station and surrounding grounds;
- Attends continuing training to maintain certifications, licenses and proficiency;
- Studies assigned materials related to emergency medical services, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue and fire prevention;
- Other duties as they relate to the essential functions of the position;
- Have graduated from high school or possess State Equivalency Diploma (GED);
- Possess a valid driver’s license;
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a current NREMT-P (National Registry EMT-Paramedic) certification and/or Maryland EMT-P License. This certification/license must be maintained for the entirety of employment.
- Successfully graduated from a structured career fire academy recruit school lasting a minimum of twelve (12) weeks in duration (subject to approval of the Fire Chief).
- Must have worked in a career fire department as an ALS provider within the last three (3) years
