Main Purpose of JobThe Natural Resources Technician II position at Deep Creek Lake Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA) provides field and technical support to the Lake Manager in the implementation of natural resource management, visitor services, and recreational access programs. This position plays an important role in assisting with the day-to-day operations of Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, supporting environmental monitoring, permit compliance, and public service functions.
The Technician performs a variety of duties related to natural resource protection, shoreline permitting, data collection, and general site maintenance across 65 miles of shoreline and 3,900 acres of freshwater at Deep Creek Lake. The Technician supports the issuance of over 1,900 annual shoreline use permits, inspections of 1,500+ parcels with Deed of Conservation Easements, and monitoring activities involving lake usage by over 1.2 million annual visitors.
Duties
This position assigns and oversees daily tasks, manages workload distribution, trains and ensures field activities are completed safely and efficiently by seasonal contractual employees and volunteers. Serves as the liaison between seasonal staff and the Lake Manager, facilitating clear communication, reporting progress, and addressing operational needs. Responds orally and in writing to requests for information and assistance from the public, adjacent property owners, realtors, and responds to calls or complaints on lake management issues.
Applies the COMAR 08.08.05 regulations to the review and issuance of all permits and activities associated with the NRMA. Facilitates meetings and site visits associated with natural resource management. Provides reports on completed tasks and communicates complex issues to the Lake Manager. Maintains and inventories tools and office equipment associated with the position such as vehicle and equipment maintenance, office supplies, survey and scientific equipment.
Collaborates with local, regional and state agencies on projects related to Deep Creek Lake including public outreach.
Experience:
Three years of experience, one year of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.
- 1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and one year of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
- 2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the completion of the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
- 3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using hand and power tools such as drills, chainsaws, impact drivers, measuring devices, winches and air compressors.
- Experience leading seasonal work crews or volunteer groups through project completion.
- Experience using land planning and ArcGIS software, GPS unit and associated software and equipment.
