REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management
SALARY: Grade 10 ($20.25 - $26.25 per hour)
ROLE: The Corporal is a certified Special Police Officer Lead position and is responsible for assisting in providing supervision of college Public Safety Officers. This position also provides protective services over college buildings and/or property within the college community by enforcing the laws of the State of Maryland and the rules and regulations of St. John’s College. This is a high-visibility, service-oriented job and a position of the public trust.
Lead officers are considered assistant shift supervisors. This is a 40 hour per week position, with shift coverage based on a 24-hour schedule that includes weekends, holidays, and various shifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the evaluating the appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
- Assist in the orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, and providing input concerning operational planning.
- Assist in training employees and complete the scheduled in-service training each year.
- Perform as a Field Training Officer for newly hired officers to mentor, coach, and train them in duties of the job.
- Provide on-site supervision of subordinate officers during shift in routine and emergency situations.
- Assist in preparing officers for scheduled events, activities, or special requests when acting in a lead capacity.
- Complete necessary documentation of personnel matters, to include recognition for awards and discipline.
- Assist in the supervision of subordinate employees by counseling, coaching, and mentoring employees.
- When acting in a lead capacity, verify officers are in proper uniform and carry SPO credentials on their person when on duty.
- Corporal are expected to be able to work with limited supervision.
- Engage with students who may be in crisis, providing support to such students and coordinating college or off-campus resources to facilitate the care of the students.
- Work with the Office of Student Services to coordinate housing issues and key control for dorm rooms and building access.
- Provide visible security and protective services to the college community by conducting routine patrols of buildings and outdoor areas on campus. Provide basic information and directions to the campus community and the general public.
- Officers are required to show courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the community. This includes not just the campus community, but anyone officers have contact with in the course of their daily duties.
- Follow campus procedures for enforcing college rule and polices, as well as state law. Commissioned officers may need to resort to physical force, when appropriate, of individuals attempting to inflict physical harm on themselves or others or commit criminal acts. Officers must understand when use of force is authorized and document it properly.
- Working knowledge of higher education issues, such as Title IX and the Clery Act. Officers are Campus Security Authorities and must know proper procedures when critical information is received about crimes or misconduct.
- Understand emergency response protocols. Officer must be able to identify and respond to emergencies by conducting a rapid assessing of a situation, utilizing critical decision making by employing tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment to resolve an incident.
- Coordinate response efforts to emergencies on the college with Annapolis Police and/or Fire Departments, as well as the Maryland Capitol Police and other outside agencies.
- Provide emergency first aid to injured persons and assist in the transportation arrangements of ill or injured persons when necessary.
- Cooperate and provide direct support to superior officers or to the local police department in the investigation of any incident.
- Maintain situational awareness of the area surrounding the college to remain abreast of possible threats to the campus community. This includes making appropriate notifications to leadership for emergency notifications to the campus community.
- Complete necessary administrative reports/forms related to incidents and/or arrests, to include gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses.
- Maintain and manage various databases, such as records management, vehicle registration, emergency contact information, and class schedules.
