Public Safety Officer II (PSO II)
Base Pay Range: $15.30/hr – $21.30/hr
Reports To:
Associate Director of Public Safety
Shift: 11:00 pm – 7:00 am
Essential Functions & Responsibilities- Provide visible security and protective services to the college community by conducting routine patrols of buildings and outdoor areas on campus, and providing basic information and directions to the campus community and the general public.
- Show courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the community, including anyone in contact during daily duties.
- Follow campus procedures for enforcing college rules and policies, as well as state law, and apply use of force when authorized.
- Work with limited supervision.
- Understand emergency response protocols and respond to emergencies by conducting rapid assessment and employing critical decision making.
- Coordinate response efforts to emergencies with Annapolis Police, Fire Departments, Maryland Capitol Police, and other outside agencies.
- Provide emergency first‑aid and assist with transportation arrangements for injured persons when necessary.
- Engage with students in crisis, supporting them and coordinating college or off‑campus resources.
- Assist the Office of Student Services with housing issues and key control for dorm rooms and building access.
- Cooperate with superior officers or the local police department in investigations of incidents.
- Maintain knowledge of higher education policies such as Title IX and the Clery Act, and process critical information about crimes or misconduct.
- Maintain situational awareness of the area surrounding the college, notifying leadership of potential threats.
- Complete administrative reports/forms related to incidents and arrests, gathering pertinent information from participants and witnesses.
- Maintain and manage databases for records management, vehicle registration, emergency contacts, and class schedules.
- Serve as a Field Training Officer, mentoring, coaching, and training new officers.
- Maintain regular radio communications with officers and staff, reporting unusual situations and requesting backup.
- Communicate directly with Annapolis Police in emergencies, following policy.
- Report and address faulty or unsafe equipment, including fire and safety gear, setting up caution tape and traffic cones.
- Notify after‑hours for incidents requiring immediate attention, such as broken pipes, windows, or leaks.
- Respond to lockouts and admit authorized personnel to locked buildings and rooms.
- Attend internal/external courses, classes, and seminars to develop protective services skills.
- Conduct security patrols during darkness and inclement weather.
- Apply for a Special Police Commission within 90 days of employment and secure it within six months.
- Maintain certifications as appropriate, including CPR, AED, tourniquet, OC spray, police baton, crowd manager, etc.
- Make arrests or manage disorderly persons as appropriate, using critical decision making and discretion to enforce Maryland law.
- Appear in court to testify regarding incidents in the college community when necessary.
- Engage in crowd control for scheduled events and emergencies, understanding First Amendment implications.
- Transport the college bank deposit.
- Wear issued uniform unless otherwise authorized and carry all credentials on duty.
- Complete routine operational procedures for each shift.
- Perform other work‑related duties as requested or assigned.
- High school graduation or GED required.
- Previous security agency experience preferred but not required.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to generate cooperation from others.
- Ability to maintain calm and order during emergencies.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of computers, especially MS Word, radios, and phones.
- Ability to be certified in first aid, CPR, and tourniquets.
- Must be able to become certified as a crowd manager.
- Successful completion of a physical examination, drug screen, and background check.
- No criminal record.
- Must possess and maintain a current valid Maryland driver’s license.
- Must be able to walk on brick sidewalks and across turf, traversing stairs, bending, and stooping.
