Position: TRAFFIC TECHNICIAN I (A6)

Installs and maintains traffic control devices. The position involves fabrication, installation, maintenance and adjustments of traffic signals, signs and markings; and related work as required.

Observes all Federal, State and local safety rules, regulations and procedures;

Installs, maintains, repairs and modifies as necessary electro-mechanical and solid state traffic control devices to include traffic signal controllers, variable message signs, arrow boards, traffic counters, radar speed trailer, line striping machine, solar-powered school flashers;

Performs administrative tasks, such as work orders, inventory, etc.;

Responds to customer inquiries and complaints;

Installs and removes post;

Paints red curbs;

Replaces flay brackets;

Coordinates sign locations with underground utilities;

Operates a fork lift;

Maintains work order records;

Assists with mechanical, preventative and corrective maintenance and installation of signs, markings, traffic signals, arrow boards, variable message signs, traffic line striper, and speed radar trailer;

Conducts general housekeeping and buildings and grounds-maintenance at Traffic Control Maintenance Shop;

Performs flagging procedures to move traffic and pedestrians safely and expeditiously through road constructions and repair work sites;

Grinds pavement markings;

Assists with snow removal; and

Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED); and one (1) year of experience in semi-skilled maintenance, installation or fabrication services or similar work team environment.

Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid driver’s license

Must be available to work emergency callback duty for traffic signal or sign repair on a regularly scheduled rotating basis

Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, to include random tests for the detection of drug or alcohol use.

Required Qualifications within one year:

Candidates will be required to pursue course work and additional training in the field and to obtain certification in the following or an acceptable equivalent:

International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal 1

Work Zone Safety

Possession of a Forklift Safety Certification

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

:

  • Knowledge of the practices, materials, tools equipment, and processes used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices;
  • Knowledge of appropriate traffic-control measures to protect work sites in or along roadways; knowledge of standard practices, materials and tools of the electrical and electronic trades including knowledge of safety hazards and precautionary methods related to the trades;
  • Knowledge of national electrical code and City codes and ordinances related to traffic signal installation and maintenance;
  • Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Institute of Traffic Engineers (ITE) Standards for signals, signs and markings;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and blueprints, diagrams, and sketches;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and the public; spelling proficiency;
  • Ability to take emergency callback duty for traffic signal or sign repair on a regularly scheduled rotating basis;
  • Ability to analyze safety situations and ability to operate a variety of construction-oriented equipment;
  • Ability to learn and carry out assignments requiring the exercise of judgement;
  • Ability to make accurate mathematical computations, keep accurate records, and to read and understand technical manuals;
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems;
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry, word processing and/or accounting purposes;
  • Ability to operate small/light equipment, such as power tools; and
  • Ability to operate medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing ability: sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing ability: sufficient to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crouching ability: sufficient to bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling ability: sufficient to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
