This posting will be used to fill full-time, permanent, represented, Safety Sensitive, Utilities Maintenance Crew Leader positions in the Infrastructure Division in the Department of Public Works, Infrastructure Division. This is limited supervisory and skilled work in the general maintenance and repair of water and wastewater lines and related facilities in the Bureau of Utility Operations.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the activities of water and wastewater line maintenance and repair crews and of road and wash crews engaged in cleaning wastewater lines. Work is performed with independence but according to established procedures; however, the more unusual or difficult work may be outlined by a superior. Work is subject to inspection by superior while in progress and upon completion.

Supervises and participates in the work of crews engaged in making emergency repairs to water and sewer lines or in unclogging wastewater lines by utilizing washing or rodding processes.

Supervises and participates in maintenance of water and wastewater collection systems; investigates complaints from the public; oversees routine maintenance of equipment. Confers with superiors on new or revised work methods and procedures; interprets work methods and procedures to subordinates; maintains various work and employee records. Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, tools, equipment, and processes of the area of assignment. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment, and of the safety precautions applicable to the work. Knowledge of maintenance and minor repair of equipment routinely used. Ability to supervise the work of subordinate unskilled and semi-skilled employees performing various maintenance tasks and to appraise the employee's performance.

Ability to operate/use wash truck, sewer rodder, hand rods, blower, gas detector, and various small tools. Ability to maintain effective public service with a minimum of interruption to public convenience. Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions, grade and line stakes, and routine engineering drawings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, other employees, and the public.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Graduation from high school; two (2) or more years of experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of water and wastewater systems; six (6) or more months lead worker experience; a temporary wastewater collection system certificate at hire; meeting the education and experience requirements and passing the appropriate board examination to obtain the Class II wastewater collection system operator's certificate within the renewal time period of three years as established by the state;

and a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE:

The (2) or more years' experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of water and wastewater systems may be substituted with an additional one (1) year of experience for a total of three (3) or more years' experience in maintenance, repair and construction of water OR wastewater systems.

NOTE:

This is a safety sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.

NOTE:

Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • A valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Experience working in confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, etc.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of sewer service laterals and sewer mains.
  • Experience in the operation of specialized water or wastewater equipment, including equipment such as a combination vacuum and wash truck, television inspection equipment, blower and gas detector.
