Position Description

This posting will be used to fill Permanent, Full-time, Represented,-met to Safety Sensitive positions within the Bureau of Highways and Utilities in the Department of Public Works. The position can be assigned to any location within the Bureau of Highways and Utilities. Full journeyman level work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, trucks and related gasoline and diesel powered equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tune engines, set timing, replace spark plugs, replace cylinder heads and gaskets, grind valves, and make service calls.
  • Repair and overhaul transmissions, differentials, and front and rear end assemblies; turn brake rotors and drums.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment to determine service requirements.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
  • Repair and overhaul generators, carburetors, and clutch assemblies; replace broken axles and springs; replace hydraulic lines and cylinders.
  • Repair and overhaul air compressors, portable pumps, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other specialized equipment, with limited welding and blacksmithing work related to repairs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, diagnostic instruments, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and operation of diagnostic equipment, tools, and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to follow oral andוואך written instructions; interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduation from high or vocational school.
  • Experience:

    Two (2) or more years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment at the full performance level.
Additional Requirements
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification as determined by the area of assignment.
  • Valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction (or obtain within six months).
  • Ability to acquire a medical certificate as mandated by Federal laws for a CDL learner's permit.
  • Safety Sensitive; subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol Testing.
  • Longevity pay based on years of service.
Supplemental Qualifications
  • Valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without air brake restriction.
  • General maintenance and repair of heavy duty trucks and off‑road equipment with complex hydraulic systems such as loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, vactors, and roll‑off trucks.
