Job DescriptionLays out, performs fit‑up, tacks, and welds parts to produce a weldment or sub‑weldment. Joins a variety of metals (aluminum, steel, stainless steel) using a full range of welding processes in different positions. Performs rework on products involving repair of defective welds and machined features. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Works from engineering drawings, work instructions, operation/process sheets, pictures, and project specifications.
- Operates manual and semi‑automatic welding and plasma cutting equipment; skilled in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW); operates oxy‑fuel cutting equipment and a plasma torch for cutting.
- Operates pneumatic tooling such as grinders, sanders, drills, and threaded‑hole tapping equipment for fit‑up.
- Uses fixtures to layout, locate, and position parts and features to be welded and reworked.
- Uses a band saw to fabricate simple parts, spacers, tie‑bars, and other items required in a welding department.
- Inspects work using precision measuring instruments.
- A minimum of one year of experience with a technical background.
- Must pass a GMAW overhead (4G) weld certification test in aluminum or steel.
- Must have the ability to use a band saw to fabricate simple parts.
- Must be able to recognize out‑of‑specification conditions and defects in weld workmanship.
- Must complete required shop floor paperwork and documentation.
- Must read and interpret drawings with weld symbols, machined features, and the UDLP/TACOM aluminum‑steel weld code book.
- Must work in a team‑oriented work environment.
- Must be capable of wearing respiratory protective equipment.
- Must possess all the skills required of a Welder I.
- A minimum of three to six months welding experience at the Vehicle Up‑Grade Facility.
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which determines wages.
