Mechanical Drafter
Job Description
The Mechanical Drafter develops detailed designs and documentation for new and existing products by creating 3D models, drawings, bills of materials, and related manufacturing documents. This role supports the full product development lifecycle, from concept and specification research through prototype builds and release to production, ensuring all designs meet functional, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
Responsibilities
+ Create accurate 3D models, engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOM), and supporting documentation to fully define products for manufacture and ensure specifications are met.
+ Research and interpret specifications to identify and select appropriate purchased components for use in product designs.
+ Independently manage small projects and defined portions of larger projects, maintaining schedules and documentation quality.
+ Direct and assist with the build of components and assemblies for prototypes and pilot builds, providing clear guidance and technical support to build teams.
+ Assist in the development and continuous improvement of engineering, drafting, and release standards to enhance consistency and efficiency.
+ Perform tolerance stack-up analysis of complex assemblies and drawings prior to documentation release to verify proper fit, function, and manufacturability.
+ Participate actively in the product development process, including design brainstorming sessions and voice-of-customer activities to incorporate user feedback into designs.
+ Initiate and prepare Engineering Change Order (ECO) documentation, including updating and developing BOMs and associated drawings as required.
+ Perform required engineering calculations to ensure all dimensions, tolerances, and specifications accurately represent design intent and functional requirements.
+ Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and other stakeholders to resolve design issues and support smooth transition from design to production.
+ Utilize CAD and PLM/ERP tools to manage design data, revisions, and release processes in accordance with established procedures.
Essential Skills
+ Two-year technical degree, preferably in drafting or design.
+ Ideally 12 years of mechanical drafting or design experience.
+ Proficiency with CAD tools;
Solid Works experience strongly preferred.
+ Hands-on experience in mechanical design and mechanical drafting.
+ Ability to design and document sheet metal components and assemblies.
+ Strong understanding of design drafting principles and engineering documentation practices.
+ Knowledge of drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
+ Familiarity with manufacturing processes relevant to mechanical components and assemblies.
+ Ability to perform tolerance stack analysis on complex assemblies and drawings.
+ Experience preparing and managing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
+ Proficiency in creating and maintaining bills of materials (BOMs).
+ Experience working with PLM and ERP systems in an engineering environment.
+ Ability to assist and direct the build of mechanical or electrical components and assemblies, ensuring alignment with design intent.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+
Experience with Solid Works CAD software.
+
Experience with ENOVIA PLM systems is a plus.
+
Experience with JD Edwards ERP systems is a bonus.
+ Knowledge of welding practices for stainless steel components is advantageous.
+ Experience in sheet metal design is highly beneficial.
+ Ability to participate effectively in design brainstorming and voice-of-customer activities.
+ Strong attention to detail and accuracy in dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
+ Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with cross-functional teams.
Work Environment
This role primarily operates in an office-based engineering environment that relies heavily on CAD, PLM, and ERP tools to develop and manage mechanical designs and documentation. The typical schedule follows a four-days-in-office and one-day-remote structure, with the possibility of being onsite full-time as operational needs evolve. Work involves close collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and build teams, including time in prototype and pilot build areas to support component and assembly fabrication.
The environment emphasizes precision, documentation quality, and teamwork, with a professional office setting and access to modern design and data management technologies.
