Job description
Job Title:
Cleaner
Reports to:
Designated Line Manager
Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of any area within the premises, designated by the line manager.
Main duties and responsibilities- Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry, buff, spray clean, spray wax, machine scrub and dry, strip and re‑polish floors using appropriate equipment.
- Clean and remove stains of soft floor surfaces (carpets/matting) using the appropriate cleaning method.
- Clean toilet and shower area including the fixtures and fittings.
- Clean, wash and dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings and internal surfaces up to 3.35 m.
- Polish furniture where appropriate.
- Empty and clean internal litter bins and remove litter to the designated collection points.
- Carry out all duties to comply with:
The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978;
Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and Regulations and other legal requirements; the COSHH Regulations; codes of practice. - Perform duties in the working conditions normally inherent in the job.
- Cover colleagues on sick leave in line with Education Authority procedure.
- Report absence in line with the Authority’s procedure and complete the relevant forms signed by the Building Supervisor.
- Wear protective clothing or work wear issued when carrying out cleaning duties.
- Wear flat‑soled enclosed‑toe footwear when carrying out cleaning duties.
- Use and care for any cleaning equipment issued safely; report defects immediately.
- Complete all necessary paperwork.
- Perform duties for jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the employee’s competence.
- Accept any training for jobs graded higher than your own; payment will be made only where required by the Authority for those duties.
- Accept any training to facilitate duties up to and including your grade, including induction and refresher training.
This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time. In accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act (1998), the post‑holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay due regard for equality legislation at all times.

- Minimum of three months measurable working experience in a cleaning role.
- Successful applicant will be required to undertake mandatory training provided by the EA cleaning service prior to commencing employment.
- Knowledge of the requirements of a School Cleaner, cleaning methods/machinery, and Health and Safety requirements relevant to the role, including COSHH.
- Effective communication skills.
- Effective team‑working skills.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to work on own initiative to complete tasks on time and to the required standard.
- Demonstration of how your experience and approach to work reflect the school’s values/ethos.
- Minimum of one year’s working experience in a cleaning role.
- Demonstrable experience of using a range of commercial cleaning tools (e.g. buffing machinery).
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. If you are recommended for a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background.
