Job SummaryThe Shelter Advocate provides trauma-informed, client-centered support and crisis intervention services to individuals and families residing in A New Leaf’s domestic violence shelter. This role is responsible for ensuring client safety, completing documentation, and helping facilitate access to internal and external resources. The advocate works collaboratively with case managers, outreach staff, and other team members to maintain a secure, welcoming, and organized environment.
Pay: $18-$20 DOE
Schedule: Sunday 6:00 am - 3:00 pm and Mon - Tuesday 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Location: Apache Junction , AZ
Our New Hire Orientation takes place during your first week of employment:
Monday–Friday | 8:30 AM–5:00 PM | HR Campus in Mesa, AZ
Early release may be granted upon completion of all orientation requirements.
Please note:
orientation is not available during evenings or weekends.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, preferred.
- Bilingual verbal communication skills in Spanish, preferred.
- Experience working with individuals impacted by domestic violence, homelessness, or economic disadvantage, preferred.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with trauma-informed practices required.
- Knowledge of local and regional community resources.

Physical Requirements: - Primarily shelter-based work with occasional travel to various locations for meetings, client transport, or site visits.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods while assisting clients, performing assessments, and documenting in the shelter.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. for materials, supplies, or client-related items.
- Standard shelter environment, with exposure to typical shelter equipment and tools, such as phones, computers, and office supplies.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond to urgent needs in a fast-paced, crisis-driven environment.
- Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all client interactions and documentation.
- Role model appropriate behaviors to callers and clients in the shelter, at all times, utilizing trauma-informed principles and practices
- Provide crisis intervention, domestic violence information, and resources and referral services to callers/clients at the shelter.
- Perform intake screenings, lethality assessments, and basic needs assessments for potential clients (as relevant to program/client needs).
- Provide supportive services to clients in the shelter and assist case managers with client needs.
- Establish/maintain client files and documentation, including requesting paperwork, and filing all documentation in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner.
- Complete accurate documentation in the database and all program paperwork in a timely, correct, and thorough manner.
- Be responsible for issues relating to admission and discharge, in conjunction with the program's definition and policies as relevant to program/client needs.
- Access community resources to support the coordination of services for clients.
- Participate in required client care supervision on a regular basis as required by A New Leaf policy.
- Facilitate monthly groups as required by the program.
- Engage with the current individual and group volunteer base to maintain and grow continuing support.
- Maintain the volunteer calendar and resident newsletter. Oversee volunteer group activities and provide program tours.
