Summary

The Tax Director – North America is responsible for leading all aspects of tax strategy, compliance, and planning for the North American operations of the company. This position will oversee corporate income tax, indirect taxes, transfer pricing, and tax provision processes, ensuring compliance with U.S., Canadian, and other applicable jurisdictions’ laws. The role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring deep technical expertise, strong process improvement capabilities, and a commitment to advancing tax function digitalization.

This role functionally reports to the Global Head of Tax.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all aspects of the North American tax function, including compliance, provision, planning, and audit defense.
  • Develop and execute tax strategies that align with corporate objectives and optimize the company’s effective tax rate.
  • Oversee preparation and review of federal, state/provincial, and local income tax returns, sales/use tax filings, and other indirect tax reports.
  • Manage quarterly and annual tax provision processes under U.S. GAAP and/or IFRS, including effective tax rate calculations and disclosures.
  • Champion the digital transformation of the tax function by implementing and optimizing tax technology solutions (e.g., automation, analytics tools, data integration with ERP systems).
  • Drive process standardization, automation, and efficiency improvements across all tax processes.
  • Implement a robust tax governance and control framework consistent with global compliance standards.
  • Lead North American transfer pricing strategy, documentation, and compliance, in coordination with global tax leadership.
  • Partner with finance, legal, and operational teams to evaluate the tax implications of business initiatives, M&A activity, and supply chain structures and communicate tax matters clearly and constructively to senior stakeholders.
  • Direct and manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess impacts on the company’s operations.
  • Mentor and develop members of the tax team.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with team members, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills by motivating team members, setting clear expectations, and guiding professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, building strong relationships across departments to achieve common goals.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluate processes and recommend improvements.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA, or advanced tax degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including leadership roles in public accounting and/or multinational corporate environments.
  • Expertise in U.S. federal and state taxation, with working knowledge of Canadian and cross-border tax principles.
  • Strong understanding of ASC 740 and IFRS tax accounting.
  • Proven track record in tax process improvement, automation, and technology adoption.
  • Experience managing complex tax audits and controversy matters.
