Outside Plant Construction Technician I — Appleton, WI.

Job location:

US-WI-Appleton. Company: TDS Telecom. Pay range: $22.62 - $33.94 per hour. Sign-On Bonus: $5,000. : . This position may be filled at different levels (I, II, III) based on skills and qualifications; separate postings for each level exist. This role is eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus (payout terms apply).

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct general construction tasks in various weather conditions, adhering to safety standards.
  • Aids in transporting construction equipment to and from the worksite.
  • Assist with and execute the installation of aerial and buried fiber based on maps, staking sheets, and locate markings.
  • Operate hand tools, cable locators, and testing equipment as needed.
  • Install and set enclosures, including buried and aerial vaults, pedestals, and handholes.
  • Climb poles, ladders, towers, and other structures as required; bucket truck when necessary.
  • Label and mark fiber optic and copper facilities accurately.
  • Utilize dispatching applications and relevant tools for project coordination.
  • Support fiber splicing, repairs, and outside plant maintenance activities.
  • Restore landscapes to original condition upon project completion.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ months experience in customer service, electrical or utility construction, or technical certification; or current/ prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • Must follow TDS attendance guidelines and be available to meet business needs.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and remain eligible for DOT requirements.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL (in-house training and certification available); ability to operate manual transmission vehicles.
  • Successful completion of safety training and customer-specific requirements, including possible background checks.
  • Physical capability to climb, kneel, dig, lift, and pull as needed.
  • Basic knowledge of telecommunications products and services.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Willingness to travel, work overtime, and adapt to various shifts as needed.

Training

As an Outside Plant Construction Technician I, you may have the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL through our in-house training program. You will receive safety training and hands-on experience with pole climbing and bucket trucks. On-the-job training includes exposure to equipment such as Directional Drill Rigs, Mini Excavators, Trenchers, and Locators, with fiber optic training including Fusion Splicing, Fault Detection, OTDRs, and related testing equipment.

Training duration varies by assignment: underground training is ~3 weeks, with an additional ~1 week for aerial training; some roles may complete only underground training depending on market needs and prior skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly (occasionally over 100 pounds). Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and depth perception.

Work conditions are outdoors and may include attics, crawl spaces, high-voltage areas, trenches, and manholes. You may be exposed to heavy equipment, fumes, vibration, extreme temperatures, and loud noises.
