CDL Driver – Sperry Rail Inc.
We are seeking a CDL Driver to operate our Rail Flaw Detection equipment, driving a detector car on and off railroad tracks while traveling extensively across the eastern and western United States. This is a heavy travel position requiring travel 3–4 months at a time within either region.

Responsibilities- Operate the test vehicle/detector car on off railroad tracks and in all road conditions.
- Perform vehicle inspections and equipment set‑up.
- Record and interpret data on computer monitors.
- Service, maintain, and repair the vehicle and detector carriage, often working with a clearance of 18 inches.
- Climb the vehicle’s steps or ladders to enter or exit and conduct ground examinations of rails.
- Communicate verbally, via radio or intercom, with pilots, crew members, and railroad personnel.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and report violations or unsafe conditions.
- Maintain awkward back and shoulder postures while under the vehicle.
- Propel body forward or backward under the vehicle—lying on the back or stomach.
- Walk on uneven surfaces in railroad beds or ballast.
- Climb steps or stairs onto or off the vehicle (up to 300 steps per day).
- Grip or grasp hand tools and test devices.
- Reach forward, overhead, and at all angles with abducted arms.
- Twist or bend the neck fully while also performing side bending with load.
- Sit for extended periods while operating the vehicle.
- Alternate between standing and sitting during tasks.
- Visual:
Observe train signals, read computer and handheld device displays, judge vehicle speed and distance. - Hearing:
Communicate with crew, listen to alarms and radios, maintain hearing within acceptable limits.
- Ensure safe driving, seat‑belt use, and compliance with DOT regulations.
- Maintain driver logs, weigh‑station records, and vehicle registration.
- Follow customer‑specific procedures and guidelines.
- Follow proper procedures for vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Assist field maintenance personnel when needed.
- Inspect, test, and report any equipment problems.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and DOT inspections.
- Keep the detector car clean and organized.
- Exercise diplomacy with railroad personnel.
- Report complaints immediately to the chief operator.
- Enter required data into the DCS reporting system.
All work is performed in the field; weather conditions may be extreme. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required: safety glasses, steel‑toed boots, hard hats, safety vests; safety goggles and neoprene gloves may be required when working with vehicle fluids. You must be trained in Road Worker Safety annually.
Basic Qualifications- Valid CDL Class A or B with air‑brake endorsement.
- Excellent communication (verbal & written).
- Ability to perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., change tire, replace battery).
- Lift up to 85 lbs and occasionally assist in lifting >100 lbs.
- Squat, kneel, and crawl under an 18‑inch clearance.
- Minimum 2 years commercial driving experience.
- High school diploma or GED.
- $1,000 sign‑on bonus after 60 days of employment.
- Annual Road Worker Safety training.
