Position: Dispatcher I/Dispatcher II (On-Call/As Needed)

Overview

Arcadia is hiring for on-call Dispatchers to support the Arcadia Police Department. This recruitment primarily focuses on hiring on-call/as-needed Dispatchers. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications, attach the required documents, and pass all components of the examination process to move forward in the selection process.

Responsibilities
  • Receive calls for service (emergency and non-emergency) from the public and determine nature, priority, and location of incidents.
  • Input and update information into the CAD system; coordinate with responding units and maintain contact with calling parties.
  • Maintain unit status, track field unit locations, and keep logs of field activity and responses.
  • Operate telecommunications equipment and computer systems (CAD, NCIC, 911, alarms, etc.) and relay information to appropriate agencies.
  • Coordinate with the Emergency Management Agency and Civil Defense during disasters or severe weather; monitor weather information and distribute critical updates.
  • Perform general clerical duties and keep confidential information secure.
  • Attend training to stay informed about local government capabilities and resources for public protection.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and coordinate with maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Prepare logs, authorize service billing, and support Records Bureau operations as required.
Qualifications

Dispatcher I

  • Knowledge of English language usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation; modern office practices and computer equipment.
  • Ability to type at least 35 words per minute (net) with a certified typing certificate issued within the last 12 months. Self-administered Internet tests are not accepted.
  • Possession of a typing certificate and ability to learn to operate emergency communications equipment.
  • Experience with basic record keeping and public interactions; ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively with upset individuals.

Dispatcher II

  • All Dispatcher I qualifications, plus additional requirements:
  • Certified POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certification; knowledge of operational characteristics of dispatch equipment and maps; ability to train new dispatchers.
  • Two years of prior related dispatch experience preferred (within past five years).
  • Ability to perform emergency dispatch work accurately and with minimal supervision; interpret and enforce policies; and oversee continued operations of dispatch activities.

Common Requirements

  • Equivalent to high school graduation with specialized training in emergency management/telecommunications.
  • Possession of a valid POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certification by the end of probation; typing certificate showing 35 WPM within 12 months.
  • Special physical requirements: ability to sit for long periods, work in enclosed environments, and availability for shift work.
