Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe Law Enforcement Recruit (Pre-Service) is a non-sworn, part-time classification for individuals attending or who have recently completed a POST-certified basic police academy. Upon successful completion and with approval, the recruit is eligible to be sworn in as a full-time Police Officer.
Supervision ExercisedExercises no supervision.
Examples of Important and Essential DutiesAttend a POST-certified academy providing an overview of the criminal justice system, including training in laws, procedures, and physical fitness. May be assigned to non-sworn duties during academy or background processing.
Other Job-Related DutiesPerform related duties as assigned.
Job Related and Essential QualificationsKnowledge: Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill to: Learn to operate modern office equipment and a motor vehicle safely.
Ability: Successfully complete a POST-certified academy; learn the functions of Federal, State, and local law enforcement; learn criminal law basics, community policing principles, patrol methods, investigation techniques, court decisions, and related procedures; interpret and apply policies; gather and analyze facts and evidence; prepare clear reports; communicate clearly; establish positive working relationships; meet physical requirements; exercise good judgment and adaptability.
Minimum QualificationsExperience: One year of experience working with the public.
Education: Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; additional education desirable.
Minimum Age: Must be 20 at application; must be 21 upon graduation from the academy or hire as sworn officer.
Medical Standards: Must pass POST medical examination; maintain physical condition; pass background investigation including polygraph and psychological examination.
Other: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; good moral character; no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions. If hired, agreement to refrain from tobacco use.
