Recruitment Process
  • Apply Online – Submit a detailed, thorough application.
  • Qualifications Appraisal Interviews (100%) – Candidates must obtain a passing score of 70% or above to be eligible for an eligibility list.
  • Selection Process
  • Chief’s Interview – Chief of Police and Arcadia Command Staff will interview candidates to determine readiness to join the Arcadia Police Department.
  • Background Check – An extensive background check will be conducted.
  • Psychological Examination – Required after successful background processing.
  • Medical Examination – Medical evaluation to assess ability to perform duties.
  • Definitions & Distinctions

    Differences among Law Enforcement Recruit, Law Enforcement Recruit (Pre-Service), and Police Officer (Lateral) classifications are noted in the job bulletin. Details include eligibility for enrollment, academy requirements, and experience expectations for each path.

    Distinguishing Characteristics

    The Law Enforcement Recruit (Pre-Service) is a non-sworn, part-time classification for individuals attending or who have recently completed a POST-certified basic police academy. Upon successful completion and with approval, the recruit is eligible to be sworn in as a full-time Police Officer.

    Supervision Exercised

    Exercises no supervision.

    Examples of Important and Essential Duties

    Attend a POST-certified academy providing an overview of the criminal justice system, including training in laws, procedures, and physical fitness. May be assigned to non-sworn duties during academy or background processing.

    Other Job-Related Duties

    Perform related duties as assigned.

    Job Related and Essential Qualifications

    Knowledge: Safe driving principles and practices.

    Skill to: Learn to operate modern office equipment and a motor vehicle safely.

    Ability: Successfully complete a POST-certified academy; learn the functions of Federal, State, and local law enforcement; learn criminal law basics, community policing principles, patrol methods, investigation techniques, court decisions, and related procedures; interpret and apply policies; gather and analyze facts and evidence; prepare clear reports; communicate clearly; establish positive working relationships; meet physical requirements; exercise good judgment and adaptability.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: One year of experience working with the public.

    Education: Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; additional education desirable.

    Minimum Age: Must be 20 at application; must be 21 upon graduation from the academy or hire as sworn officer.

    Medical Standards: Must pass POST medical examination; maintain physical condition; pass background investigation including polygraph and psychological examination.

    Other: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; good moral character; no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions. If hired, agreement to refrain from tobacco use.
