Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs) perform teaching, grading, and tutoring duties in assigned academic departments or administrative units for most of their weekly hours. Work may be performed on‑campus or at an off‑campus public agency or private non‑profit organization under an agreement with a CSU campus. Students applying must be admitted or registered as a CSU student. Academic Student Employees may not hold a faculty or staff position concurrently.
Students holding more than one student classification are restricted to working a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to full‑time during academic break periods.
- Provide academic coaching to Cal Poly Humboldt students on an individual basis, addressing topics such as goal setting, time management, planning, encouraging student/faculty relationships, study strategies, and navigating campus resources.
- Assist the coordinator with outreach initiatives, presentations, and the creation of program materials; mentor new coaches.
- Greeting students, scheduling, data entry, writing session notes, conducting outreach campaigns, and informing the supervisor of shift changes or other problems encountered.
- Work as Writing Consultants in the Writing Studio, working one‑to‑one, in small groups, and/or online with students on academic writing, revising and editing in any subject area.
- Present writing workshops to peers and/or perform classroom outreach; mentor new ISAs.
- Attend required trainings—both asynchronous and in‑person—before the semester begins and during the semester.
- Perform additional duties in the Learning Center as determined by the supervisor, which may include planning and facilitating staff training, developing specialized materials, completing observations and mentoring student staff, and completing special research projects.
- Lead peer‑facilitated Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions, writing lesson plans, and communicating with designated faculty.
- Assist tutoring in specific subjects online or in person, host weekly tutoring hours, and maintain communication via email with the supervisor about changes or problems.
- Collaborate with specific professors to assist with in‑class activities, create and/or conduct presentations, create and post Canvas or social media content to promote tutoring, and track tutoring techniques used in the lab.
- Admission or registration as a Humboldt student is required.
- On‑Campus or Off‑Campus Work‑Study Instructional Student Assistants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Federal Work‑Study Program, as determined by the campus' financial aid office.
- Must possess a sophomore or higher standing, be in good academic standing, and have a grade of B or better in English composition courses or equivalent.
- Positive faculty recommendations and strong communication skills are essential.
- Prior experience assisting students and the ability to work effectively with diverse students and learning needs are required.
- Preference is given to applicants who can work in‑person and on campus and to applicants with a broad knowledge of learning skills.
