DESCRIPTION:

Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Biological Sciences invites applicants for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position with an emphasis in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a focus on biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the health and medical sciences program, contributing expertise in molecular and cellular mechanisms of human health and disease.

DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Biological Sciences at Humboldt is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education, hands-on research, and fostering an inclusive and supportive academic community. Our faculty expertise spans cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, ecology, and organismal biology. We have a strong history in training students in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine through our California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)-funded Bridges Scholars Program and are excited to open the Cal Poly Humboldt-CIRM Shared Resources Laboratory.

will provide state of the art research and teaching facilities available to our new cellular and molecular biology colleague. This position will also contribute to the new Health and Medical Sciences B.S. degree program . As one of the academic programs included in our university’s transformation to California’s newest polytechnic university, this position will contribute to the applied, experiential learning and active mentoring that will prepare students for graduate school, health professions, and careers in biotechnology and related fields.

Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: BIOL 350 Cell Biology, BIOL 340 Genetics, and BIOL 105 Principles of Biology. In year three of the appointment, the successful candidate may also be assigned BIOL 440 Molecular Genetics Laboratory, BIOL 450 Cell Biology Laboratory, BIOL 455 Cellular and Gene Therapy, BIOL 544 Stem Cell Biology, and/or ZOOL 476 Developmental Biology, depending on the expertise of this new faculty member.

Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty.

During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities that meet the department's standards required for retention, tenure, and promotion .
