Position Summary:
The Facilities Management Grounds Manager is responsible for the oversight and governance of all campus grounds operations, covering both main campus and housing areas.
- Provide day‑to‑day direct supervision, management, training, and leadership for all professional and student staff in Housing and Academic Grounds.
- Provide guidance on grounds issues: irrigation, turf management, plantings, tree maintenance, and pest control.
- Ensure the work management system accurately reflects activity in the grounds department and aligns with FM goals/objectives.
- Coordinate ordering of all grounds‑related equipment and supplies/services.
- Gather and incorporate grounds team feedback for new campus projects via plan review and comment.
- Communicate and coordinate regularly with the Director of Facilities Operations, participate in campus committees, and oversee the execution of grounds co‑management agreements.
- Demonstrated knowledge of turf management, local and exotic plant species, general tree and vegetation maintenance, and pest control.
- Proficient in irrigation control, planting strategies for Humboldt County, and safe operation of grounds equipment.
- Ability to coordinate labor resources for a small team (2‑4 people).
- Excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and ability to work harmoniously with diverse stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of plan set organization for project review.
- California driver’s license.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a grounds services setting performing similar duties.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory or lead experience.
- Experience using a computerized maintenance management system.
- Experience managing/supervising a larger grounds team (4 or more people).
- Four‑year degree in a related field from an accredited university or college.
- Training experience for new and existing grounds team members.
- Knowledge of Cal Poly Humboldt’s campus exterior grounds.
