The Role

This role will serve as a key advisor across general insurance, policy wording, claims and coverage matters in a business facing role working closely with the underwriting and claims team across a range of specialty lines and reinsurance.

Key Accountabilities

Wordings & Product Development:

  • Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate bespoke policy wordings, clauses, and endorsements across specialty lines and reinsurance.
  • Product Innovation: Collaborate with Underwriting teams to develop new insurance products, ensuring that the legal language captures the commercial intent while protecting the Group from unintended exposures.
  • Review of Incoming Contracts: Act as the legal "gatekeeper" for all incoming insurance‑related contracts, identifying potential risks and ensuring alignment with Fidelis’ risk appetite.

Coverage Advice:

  • Strategic Coverage Advice: Provide expert legal analysis on complex coverage issues, assisting the claims team in interpreting policy intent for high‑value or novel specialty claims.

General Insurance Advice

  • External Counsel Liaison: Coordinate with external counsel on specific legal processes and support the preparation of documents for review.
  • Regulatory & General Advisory: Provide "in‑house" counsel on general insurance matters, including regulatory shifts and market‑wide legal developments affecting specialty lines.
  • Cross‑Functional Liaison: Serve as a bridge between Legal, Underwriting, and Risk, translating complex legal concepts into actionable commercial advice for the business.

Operational Matters:

  • General Operational: Advise operational teams on legal and regulatory requirements and review operational processes to ensure they are in compliance with necessary requirements.
  • Framework Building: Assist with developing the team’s operational legal framework by building and refining internal processes, template libraries, and governance structures to add long‑term value to the firm.

Strategic Projects & Work streams:

  • Insurance strategic transactions: Assist with strategic insurance transactions by managing documentation, due diligence and broader transaction timelines.
Skills & Experience
  • Qualified lawyer with the ability to practice in the United States or England & Wales with at least 4 years post‑qualification experience.
  • Demonstrable experience as an insurance lawyer in commercial and speciality insurance lines in an advisory role, claims handling, or wordings specialist.
  • Experience working in the insurance / reinsurance sector.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy, professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Strong sense of urgency, personal responsibility, accountability; self‑motivated, efficient, effective.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to interact with individuals on all levels, including senior leadership.
  • Ability to think demonstrate ownership and act as a problem solver.
