Job Summary

The Technology Commercialization Specialist focuses on identifying, nurturing, and managing partnerships across community, corporate, investor, government, academic, and nonprofit sectors. The ideal candidate advances a portfolio of university technologies into the commercial marketplace through licensing agreements or assisting in the formation of start‑up companies. They collaborate closely with university faculty to drive intellectual property (IP) development and commercialization, acting as a liaison between research and external stakeholders to harness university innovations, secure funding, and create commercialization opportunities.

The role requires expertise in technology sales, marketing, and business development and supports a wide range of activities contributing to the overall success of the University of Texas at Arlington’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology Development.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active portfolio of industry contacts and establish a business development strategy.
  • Actively seek out and identify potential partners that align with the University’s research strengths.
  • Build and nurture relationships with government funding agencies, private foundations, and venture capitalists to expand funding sources for research and development.
  • Successfully negotiate and execute licenses with industry partners or through the creation of spin‑off companies.
  • Prepare regular sales funnel reports on partnership activities, funding secured, and IP licensing revenue.
  • Monitor program metrics, tracking partnership activities, engagement outcomes, and revenue from IP and technology commercialization.
  • Independently manage a portfolio of existing disclosures to assess opportunity.
  • Provide guidance to faculty on commercialization strategies.
  • Work with PIs to identify prior art and competing patents.
  • Monitor existing licensed IP from ideation to revenue.
  • Ensure compliance of licensee with terms and conditions of agreements.
  • Negotiate amendments as necessary and manage contract documentation.
  • Proactively identify potential problems with inventors, sponsors, licensees and develop solutions.
  • Determine scenarios requiring legal action and help develop solutions, including termination, arbitration, or litigation.
  • When possible, negotiate settlement or participate in arbitration or litigation.
  • Maintain campus-wide relationships with Principal Investigators.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators to gain understanding of their research interests and identify opportunities for external collaboration, funding, and commercialization.
  • Develop relationships with PIs pre‑disclosure for efficient commercial pathways.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external stakeholders and PIs.
  • Coordinate and lead meetings with PIs and stakeholders about their IP portfolio.
  • Explain to PIs the process of innovation management along the commercialization pathway.
  • Explain UTA policies and vendor contracts to PIs and stakeholders.
  • Develop tools, resources, and support systems to help PIs navigate industry and external partnerships.
  • Facilitate R&D initiatives with PIs aligned with University mission and partner interests.
  • Support strategic priorities including grants, sponsored research agreements, and corporate engagement.
  • Maintain relationships with the Development Office, Office of Sponsored Projects, and departmental corporate engagement efforts.
  • Determine IP strategies to support commercial applications and pathways for start‑ups or licensing based on campus priorities.
