Role Overview

The Pharmacist is responsible for the complete and efficient operation of the pharmacy within all legal and accreditation/certification requirements and applicable facility policies, procedures, codes, and standards. This includes managing administrative, pharmaceutical, and professional functions relating to pharmaceutical care provided at the facility.

Your Impact
  • Demonstrate compliance with all Joint Commission, OSHA regulations, and state and federal laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain state and federal required records and licenses in order to maintain adequate accountability and control.
  • Maintain adequate control over the requisitioning and dispensing of all drugs and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Monitor the adherence to pharmacy and facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform pharmacy quality assurance program activities.
  • Dispense medications, chemicals, and pharmaceutical preparations, safely, accurately, and according to state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate judgment in communicating with physicians/licensed practitioners, nurses, and other facility staff.
  • Perform monthly inspections of the drug storage areas and complete appropriate records for file.
  • Review all patient medical records and document pertinent information in a timely manner.
  • Monitor patient charts for drug interaction, adverse drug reactions, and all other aspects of appropriate drug therapy.
  • Effectively monitor the formulary to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and achieve cost controls.
  • Appropriately fill and label all drug containers issued to service departments.
  • Appropriately charge patient records for pharmaceuticals used if applicable.
  • Dispense all narcotic drugs and maintain appropriate inventories.
  • Ensure proper distribution, procurement, and clinical services functions within the pharmacy.
  • Inspect all pharmaceutical supplies and services provided by the pharmacy.
  • Maintain appropriate antidotes and other emergency drugs.
  • Provide counseling and consultation concerning medication to patients, families and facility staff, including providing educational materials, outpatient services, and samples as required.
  • Provide appropriate pharmacologic and pharmacokinetics in treatment planning.
  • Consult (verbally or in writing) when requested or when appropriate.
  • Act as a resource for pharmacy/medication related policies and procedures.
  • Promote and participate in patient education (i.e. medication education handouts).
  • Provide drug information effectively to the medical and facility staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and records.
Required Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduate from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Experience:

    A minimum of three (3) years hospital pharmaceutical experience is recommended; must possess the experience to oversee the provision of medication regimens for the patient populations treated in the facility, including a knowledge of dosage for age‑specific populations.
  • Licensure:
    Currently licensed as a Pharmacist in the applicable state.
  • Additional Requirements:

    A working knowledge of JCAHO Standards, OSHA regulations, and state and federal laws and regulatory requirements.
