Job Description And Qualifications

As a registered nurse in the Medical Surgical Orthopedic Unit, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to adult and geriatric patients recovering from orthopedic procedures, musculoskeletal injuries, trauma, and a variety of medical-surgical conditions. In line with department requirements and state nursing standards, you will collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, rehabilitation specialists, and interdisciplinary care teams to provide comprehensive, compassionate care.

Utilizing established nursing processes such as "Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage", you will promote optimal patient recovery, mobility, pain management, and positive clinical outcomes while advocating for patients, families, and caregivers

What you will do in this role:
  • Assess patients' physical and psychosocial conditions upon admission and during each scheduled shift, promptly recognizing and reporting changes in condition, including post-operative complications, neurovascular changes, infection risks, and mobility limitations.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for medical-surgical and orthopedic patients, including those recovering from joint replacement procedures, fracture repairs, spine surgeries, and other orthopedic interventions.
  • Perform ordered treatments, procedures, and monitoring activities while ensuring accurate and timely documentation in the patient's medical record.
  • Administer prescribed medications, including pain management therapies, anticoagulants, antibiotics, and other treatments, while monitoring for therapeutic effectiveness and adverse reactions.
  • Conduct neurovascular assessments and monitor surgical sites, drains, dressings, and orthopedic devices to ensure safe recovery and early identification of complications.
  • Collaborate with physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, and case management teams to support patient mobility goals, discharge planning, and continuity of care.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding orthopedic conditions, surgical recovery expectations, pain management strategies, mobility precautions, fall prevention, medication regimens, and post-discharge care plans.
  • Promote patient safety through adherence to fall prevention measures, infection prevention practices, and evidence-based clinical protocols.
  • Provide exceptional patient-centered care by responding promptly to patient needs, anticipating concerns, and fostering a positive healing environment.
  • Support patients in achieving recovery milestones and independence through encouragement, education, and coordination of care services.
What qualifications you will need:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Minimum of 1 year of acute care nursing experience required;
Medical Surgical and/or Orthopedic nursing experience preferred.
  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and patient education skills.
