Job Title: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Part-Time / On-Call

Role Summary

JM Fabrication is seeking a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to support welding qualification, compliance, and technical oversight on a part-time basis. This role has the potential to cover a full time. This role exists to ensure our welding program stands up to audits, customer scrutiny, and code requirements.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Witness and inspect weld coupons for qualification testing
  • Support development, review, and validation of: PQRs, WPSs, WPQs
  • Perform visual inspections in accordance with AWS and applicable standards
  • Provide technical guidance to engineering, quality, and welding personnel when questions arise
  • Support internal audits and external customer or regulatory audits as required
  • Review weld discontinuities, determine acceptability, and provide clear, defensible dispositions
  • Advise on corrective actions when welding issues occur
  • Maintain professional independence, no rubber-stamping documents

Codes and Standards

Must be competent in one or more of the following, depending on job requirements:

  • AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D1.6, AWS D17.1
  • Customer-specific or aerospace flowdown requirements as applicable

Required Qualifications

  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • Demonstrated experience qualifying welders and procedures
  • Ability to author, review, and defend PQR, WPS, and WPQ documentation
  • Strong understanding of essential variables and code intent
  • Comfortable challenging bad assumptions and stopping non-conforming work

Preferred Experience

These are not required, but they separate average inspectors from serious ones:

  • Aerospace or defense manufacturing environment
  • Experience supporting customer audits such as Lockheed, Airbus, or similar primes
  • Familiarity with Pro Shop or comparable ERP systems
  • Experience working with aluminum, steel, and stainless assemblies

Engagement Model

  • Part-time, on-call, or contract basis with potential to convert to full-time.
  • Engagement driven by need, not fixed schedule
