Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

Essential Functions
  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly; supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Prepares attendance records, skill performance reports, progress reports and end of session certificates.
  • Calls participants whenever class changes occur, such as in instances of inclement weather.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Maintains order and discipline among participants.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and, as appropriate, refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Knows and reviews AMA YMCA Aquatics Safety Plan and follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Applies all YMCA policies and procedures and exemplifies the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum age of 16.
    • Certifications:

      Professional rescuer CPR/AED/O2 and First Aid.
    • Current YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent.
    • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
    • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
    • Capacity to work cooperatively in a team environment.
    • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
    • Child Abuse Prevention, Understanding Your Biases, Anti-Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls trainings required within 30 days of hire.

    • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
