Position SummaryReporting to the Manager, Operations and Maintenance, the Operations and Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and economical operation, maintenance, and monitoring of hydroelectric facilities. This role involves hands‑on maintenance, repair, and operation of turbine/generator systems and related equipment. This position may also include services to battery storage and solar projects as part of the operational scope.
Location: On‑Site - 423 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345 USA
Responsibilities- Operate, control, and monitor hydroelectric generating units and pond levels to comply with regulatory requirements while maximizing generation efficiency.
- Test equipment, troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions or failures of electrical or mechanical operational issues.
- Act in a financially responsible manner by adhering to approved procedures for company expenses, including operations and maintenance (O&M), project costs, and travel. Meet financial reporting deadlines, including submissions related to company‑issued credit cards.
- Perform preventative maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment such as motors, transformers, voltage regulators, generators, battery systems, air compressors, sump pumps, gates, hydraulic HPUs, and cooling system lubrication.
- Maintain electrical drawings, equipment files, sketches, reports, logs and records.
- Adhere to the Operating System to ensure operational compliance and environmental accountability at all facilities, maintaining health and safety at a Gold Standard level.
- Perform site checks and record data for site‑specific requirements, including water levels, temperatures, flows, logbook entries, battery reports, production reports, minimum flow reports, safety equipment checklists, dam safety and surveillance reports, site‑specific checklists, daily scorecards, and associated logbook entries.
- Operate and maintain equipment, as well as install nets and barriers for fish passage.
- Keep facilities and grounds clean, safe, and accessible.
- Represent the company in a professional manner with vendors, state and federal agencies, and non‑governmental organizations.
- Occasionally operate trucks, forklifts, cranes, and power tools and other equipment.
- Perform other job‑related duties as required.
- An Associate Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Technology is desirable; however, all relevant training, experience, or certifications in applicable disciplines will be considered.
- Possession of a current, valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence.
- Two (2) years of experience in hydroelectric operations or (2) years of experience working in the hydro industry in areas of civil/electrical/mechanical trades, or other relevant experience.
- Experience with standard principles, methods, practices, techniques, tools and test equipment used to test, troubleshoot, repair and maintain electrical control equipment in hydroelectric power generating operations.
- Knowledge of safety, security and fire rules and procedures.
- Ability to work irregular hours, to support operations, and to be available on‑call, 24/7, for emergencies.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to regularly work outside, in varying weather conditions.
