About Forterra
Forterra is a leading provider of autonomous systems for ground-based movement in the working world. Amongst some of the earliest innovators in the field of driverless technology, Forterra is focused on building systems that protect front-line soldiers and enable civilian workers in our industrial base. Forterra is the go-to provider of ground autonomy solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, which harnesses the technology for asymmetric warfare in critical conditions.
Aboutthe role
Forterra is seeking a Mapping and Localization Engineer to join our team in developing robust and innovative localization systems for autonomous systems. The ideal candidate has a strong software development background coupled with experience developing and optimizing algorithms for precise localization and mapping in dynamic environments.
What you’ll do- Develop and implement algorithms for localization and mapping for autonomous ground vehicles, including techniques such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), visual odometry, and other advanced localization techniques
- Design and optimize real-time systems for integrating data from various sensors, including LiDAR, radar, cameras, and IMUs for highly accurate vehicle localization and mapping
- Enhance existing SLAM and mapping algorithms for dynamic environments, such as urban and off-road areas
- Improve the vehicle's ability to localize and map in GPS-denied or challenging conditions (e.g., tunnels, forests, crowded urban environments)
- Evaluate, test, and validate localization and mapping solutions through both simulation, playback, and field tests to ensure accuracy, robustness, and reliability
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Experience designing and developing localization and mapping algorithms (e.g., Point cloud registration, SLAM, Visual Odometry)
- Experience with multiple sensor modalities such as LIDARs, cameras, RADARs, and IMUs
- Strong background in linear algebra, computational mathematics
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, and/or MATLAB
