Overview
AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist II to provide support for Water and Wastewater Program initiatives and projects. This is a full-time, hybrid (on-site and remote) position located in Loudoun, Virginia. The ideal candidate will have experience performing work for community water and wastewater issues in the municipal sector, with the ability to work somewhat independently when given task assignments. This position will perform detailed analyses of environmental programs, legislation, policies, regulations, and potential liabilities;
provide technical support on a variety of environmental initiatives and on water and wastewater systems serving facilities; and support in the preparation and presentation of information to the public such as a Board of Supervisors, Commissions, Committees, organizations, and the general public.
- Provides technical support under direction of a supervisor to environmental programs. Will provide technical support, research, and report on an existing Water and Wastewater Assistance Program or Needs Assessment Work Plan, make recommendations, and coordinate efforts with other jurisdictions, supporting in the preparation of presentation materials.
- Provides support under direction of a supervisor to water and wastewater strategic projects. Will work on community water and wastewater projects, and coordinate completion of work products from varied departments and entities.
- Research and report on environmental legislation. Will review and evaluate environmental and energy related legislation; reports status of legislation throughout the General Assembly session; and completes written analysis and detailed reports.
- May perform other essential job functions specific to the position and department assignment.
- Serve on a project team in support of water and wastewater projects; coordinate and facilitate work products from different departments, agencies, VDH, VDEQ, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Monitor operation and maintenance and testing schedules for Alternative Onsite Sewage Systems and Wells located at various facilities to assure state requirements are adhered to; review design plans and consult with regulatory departments for onsite water and wastewater system upgrades and repairs.
- Support maintenance teams with onsite sewage system repairs, emergency response issues, and public waterworks (wells) serving various facilities.
- Review engineer plans and provide comment on water and wastewater systems proposals for new County facilities.
- Maintain an inventory of attributes of onsite and wastewater systems at various facilities.
- Complete purchase order requests and process invoices associated with necessary water and wastewater system work.
- Review, evaluate, and track state environmental and energy related legislation; inform supervisor of status of legislation throughout the General Assembly session; maintain a tracking log for management, comments, and suggested action.
- Monitor air quality programs, events, and issues in the region and advise supervisor of impacts; monitor state legislation and regulations related to air quality and the Clean Air Act.
- Provides technical support, research, and reporting related to the Chesapeake Bay TMDL Watershed Improvement Plan; assist with community meetings and community outreach events as directed; provide technical assistance to environmental initiatives; complete reports; present material in a thorough, accurate and professional manner.
- Conduct detailed research and analysis of environmental items; complete accurate written and technical analysis of environmental subject material for use by planning committees; complete reports; monitor proposed changes to state and federal environmental and environmental health regulation/policy and report to supervisor on items that may have an impact.
- Support initiatives on special projects; attend and complete training requirements; represent the Department on State and Local committees or advisory groups when directed by supervisor.
- Review proposed energy and environmental legislation to determine potential impact and coordinate a response.
- Demonstrate compliance with County, Department, and Division policies and procedures, and federal/state laws and regulations, as applicable to position.
- Completes required training.
- Assist internal and external customers; communicate effectively with customers during service calls; and ensure customer satisfaction with work performed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS in Environmental Science Field or similar field + 2 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education.
- Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
- Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required
- Wastewater experience is required.
