Senior Energy Strategy Manager, AWS Energy Team Job Description
Amazon is seeking a self‑starter to join the AWS Energy team in pioneering the future for data center utility power by developing and executing the strategy by which AWS delivers energy projects and partners with electric utilities and energy companies across the Americas. This individual will define the end‑to‑end (generation, transmission, distribution, backup power) power strategy for scaling and operating AWS’ diverse, low‑cost energy supply.
In this role, you will manage multiple large‑scale and technically complex power infrastructure projects across multiple geographies by facilitating close collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. The role includes reporting status, risks, mitigations and successes to C‑level and VP‑level leadership, influencing cross‑functional partner teams, managing utility interactions, coordinating real‑estate, engineering and planning efforts in site evaluation, project engineering, scheduling, budgeting, and contracting with utilities, EPCs or owners’ engineers.
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive utilities strategy for AWS data centers for AMER regions.
- Manage multiple utilities, EPCs and owner’s engineers to deliver medium‑ and high‑voltage power infrastructure, including negotiations and contracting.
- Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (grid connections, substations, energy storage, etc.) to reduce long‑term energy costs; manage capital budgets for electrical infrastructure and energy projects.
- Collaborate with Amazon CFE/RE teams to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
- Execute electricity supply contracts that create new clean‑energy capacity on the grid, reduce cost, minimize risk and deliver benefits for Amazon.
- Manage a portfolio of complex energy projects.
- Collaborate with internal teams and regulated utilities on the implementation and management of energy projects to meet business timelines.
- Identify and develop innovative cost‑saving projects (capital and operational) and initiatives related to energy infrastructure and supply.
- Complete due diligence on in‑market opportunities and develop those opportunities into cost savings for the business.
- Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. The team works on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, and is looking for talented people who want to help. BasicQualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business‑related field.
- 7+ years working in the utility/energy industry in a commercial, business‑development or technical role.
- 3+ years of power transaction or contracting experience in US East (PJM & MISO) energy markets, including financial models, rate analysis and interconnection agreements.
- 2+ years managing multiple multi‑million‑dollar power infrastructure contracts with external stakeholders.
- Master’s degree or MBA in business, finance, engineering, public administration, data science, or related field.
- Experience in project management, including resource planning, schedule management, status reporting and prioritizing multiple projects.
- Experience in data centers, infrastructure service providers or related technology companies.
- Experience planning, engineering, developing or constructing substations or other 34.5 kV or greater energy infrastructure.
- Experience evaluating and implementing innovative infrastructure and operational strategies within the energy sector such as energy storage, demand response, fuel cells.
- Experience working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
