Amentum is a leading provider of engineering, scientific, and program management support services to the U.S. government, including DARPA, NASA, DHS, and the intelligence community.

DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office (BTO) leverages biological properties and processes to advance national security. BTO focuses on diagnostic and assessment systems to identify chemical and biological threats, develop medical countermeasures, and enhance warfighter performance and recovery. BTO also explores resilient infrastructures, protective solutions, and innovative sensors across the biological spectrum.

Amentum is seeking an experienced professional to support BTO as a Robotics Engineer/Scientist on a program focused on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). The role will be part of a Government Program Manager’s multi-disciplinary SE-TA support team, developing innovative program concepts that incorporate peer and leadership feedback. You will collaborate with subject matter experts in medicine and machine learning to deliver advanced autonomous technologies to field operators such as combat medics and surgeons, improving warfighter mortality rates.

This role requires a skilled engineer with experience designing, training, prototyping, and testing autonomous robotic systems across air, land, and sea applications.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with a DARPA Program Manager, providing specialized technical expertise and supporting idea development, justification, and refinement.
  • Assist in the development and management of current and future biomedical programs in BTO, including new start programs, source selection, and performance assessment.
  • Assess technical soundness of new ideas submitted under BTO’s Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for alignment with BTO goals and to address unmet program topics.
  • Stay abreast of state‑of‑the‑art results in fields relevant to the DARPA program being supported.
  • Evaluate performer progress on R&D programs using performance metrics and agreed objectives.
  • Engage with relevant communities, stakeholders, transition partners, and performers.
Minimum Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience developing autonomous systems (UAV, UGV, UUV) at varying payload and dexterity levels.
  • Expertise in perception sensor systems and large‑scale signal acquisition and analysis using advanced machine learning tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and C++; strong familiarity with robotics frameworks such as ROS.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentals, especially in control systems and sensor integration.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance; US citizenship required.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences.
  • Professionalism, maturity, sound judgment, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills for executive‑level interactions.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed, across a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work on‑site full‑time at DARPA in Arlington, VA.
Highly Desired Attributes
  • PhD in an engineering field—preferably robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance; US citizenship required.
  • Experience designing systems for medical applications and knowledge of FDA medical device approval processes.
  • Experience competing or managing robotics competitions.
