Sr. Energy Strategy Manager, AWS Energy Team

Amazon is seeking a self‑starter to join the AWS Energy team in pioneering the future for data center utility power by developing and executing the strategy by which AWS delivers energy projects and partners with electric utilities and energy companies across the Americas. The role involves defining the end‑to‑end power strategy (generation, transmission, distribution, backup power) for scaling and operating AWS’ diverse, low‑cost energy supply.

In this role you will manage multiple, large‑scale, technically complex power infrastructure projects across multiple geographies, facilitating close collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. You will also report status, risks, mitigations and successes to C‑level and VP‑level leadership and influence cross‑functional partner teams in the overall data center capacity delivery business process.

Externally, you will own utility interactions, coordinate efforts between real estate, engineering, and planning teams in site evaluation, project engineering, scheduling and budgeting, and contract with utilities, EPCs and/or Owner’s Engineers to meet AWS’ needs. You will work in an integrated team to implement a strategy that meets and exceeds AWS’ energy program requirements while delivering projects on time, with tangible reliability and cost‑saving results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive utilities strategy for AWS data centers in the AMER regions.
  • Manage multiple utilities, EPCs and Owner’s Engineers to deliver MV and HV power infrastructure, including negotiations and contracting.
  • Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, high‑voltage substations, energy storage, etc.) to reduce long‑term energy costs; manage capital budgets for electrical infrastructure and energy projects.
  • Collaborate with Amazon CFE/RE teams to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
  • Execute electricity supply contracts that create new clean energy capacity on the grid, reduce cost, minimize risk and leverage opportunities that benefit Amazon.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex energy projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and regulated utilities on the implementation and management of energy projects to meet business timelines.
  • Identify and develop innovative cost‑saving projects (capital and operational) and initiatives related to energy infrastructure and supply.
  • Responsible for completing due diligence on in‑market opportunities and developing those opportunities into cost savings for the business.
  • Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related technical field.
  • 7+ years working in the utility/energy industry in a commercial/business development or technical role.
  • 3+ years of power transaction or contracting experience in U.S. East (PJM & MISO) energy markets, performing financial models and analysis on rates and energy cost, negotiating interconnection agreements and related contracts with utilities and contractors.
  • 2+ years managing multiple multi‑million‑dollar power infrastructure contracts with external stakeholders to drive projects to completion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; MBA highly desired.
  • Experience managing multiple projects in parallel through prioritization, planning, and task delegation.
  • Experience in data centers, infrastructure service providers, or related technology companies.
  • Experience planning, engineering, developing, or constructing substations or other 34.5 kV or greater energy infrastructure.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing innovative infrastructure and operational strategies within the energy sector (energy storage, demand response, fuel cells, etc.).
  • Experience working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
