Systems Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to support marine engineering efforts for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and commercial shipbuilding efforts in Arlington, VA
. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.
Typical Responsibilities
- Design and analyze mechanical systems for ships, including propulsion, piping, HVAC, and machinery arrangements.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate with naval architects, structural engineers, and production teams to ensure integration of systems.
- Perform calculations related to fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and machinery performance.
- Support installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems on board vessels.
- Conduct failure analysis, troubleshooting, and recommend design improvements.
- Participate in design reviews, supplier evaluations, and quality assurance processes.
Primarily onsite at THOR office in Arlington/Shirlington, VA.
TravelUp to 10% travel is anticipated.
Typical Physical ActivityPrimarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve repetitive motion and periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including traversing confined spaces, ladders, hoses, and hatches.
Typical Pay RangeThe anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $80,000 – 120,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is RequiredThis position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in naval architecture.
- Experience with computer applications relating to shipboard mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Proficient with common productivity software.
- Strong communications skills.
- Ideal experience will have been obtained in U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs.
- Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
- Experience with Pipeflo.
