Position: Executive Director (ACF)

The Arlington Community Foundation, established in 1991, is a non-profit charitable foundation that provides philanthropic leadership in Arlington County, Virginia, through grant making, scholarships and civic leadership promoting and improving the quality of life throughout the community. The Foundation serves as a bridge between philanthropic donors and those in need and between public and private interests. The Foundation is a leader convening non-profits, government entities and funders to collaboratively address critical issues and opportunities confronting the community.

The Foundation currently has over $18 million in assets. Through approximately 150 donor advised funds and organizations, the Foundation supports homelessness prevention, youth and families in need, education and other community needs and interests. The “Fund for Arlington” meets emerging community needs as they occur. Through its scholarship program, the Foundation is the largest provider of college scholarships in Arlington, giving over $ 500,000 to 200 deserving students in 2017 alone.

Through the Nonprofit Resource Center, the Foundation works with Arlington’s nonprofits and government to maximize their impact through collaborating more effectively.

Overall Objective

The Foundation Board of Trustees seeks to hire an Executive Director who has the vision and passion to lead the organization into its next chapter. The Executive Director must demonstrate outstanding development, strategic, and leadership skills, an ongoing commitment to organizational excellence, and an appreciation of the unique aspects of Arlington.

Purpose of The Position

As the chief executive of the Foundation, the Executive Director is responsible for sustaining and advancing the mission of the Foundation in collaboration with the Board of Trustees. He/she provides the leadership and overall supervision for all aspects of the Foundation’s operations on both a day-to- day and a strategic long term basis including but not limited to: resource development; fiscal management;

communications and marketing; personnel; program oversight and accreditation.

Scope of Responsibility

The Executive Director currently manages a staff of three consisting of a Manager of Operations and Program Support Services, Director of the Arlington Nonprofit Resource Center and an Administrative Assistant.

STRATEGIC PLANNING:

  • Implements the vision, mission and strategy of the foundation. Establishes current and long term goals and objectives in collaboration with the Board of Trustees.
  • Works with the Board of Trustees to implement, update and measure programs toward long range strategic and near term goals and objectives.
  • Advises the Board of Trustees as to whether the strategic plan continues to reflect the needs of the community and the capabilities of the Foundation.

EXECUTIVE AND OPERATIONAL:

  • Responsible for the Foundation’s fiscal integrity. Oversees the adequacy and soundness of the organization’s financial structure and performance. Responsible for the preparation of the organization’s annual budget for consideration and adoption by the Board of Trustees. Oversees performance in accordance with the adopted budget. Manages the Foundation’s resources within budget guidelines; provides financial reports and budget analysis for the Board’s review and approval.
  • Directs and administers the operations of the Foundation, including grant and scholarship program activities, donor and agency fund management, financial systems, community outreach, external relations and database management.
  • Leads, engages and retains a diverse staff ensuring operations are executed with excellence andin accordance with the organization’s policies.
  • Recruits, engages, motivates and retains diverse staff and partner organizations to realize the Foundation’s vision. Successfully delivers its programs and services while overseeing staff development in support of the Foundation’s strategic plan.
  • Ensures programmatic and administrative efficiencies. Recommends timelines and resources to achieve goals and proposes new ways of conducting the Foundation’s operations.
